POV: Your Toddlers In Their Tantrum Era

One minute your toddler is happy as can be, then in a second they’re set off by…what? No, literally what?

The amount of times I’m left dumbfounded and confused by an out-of-the-blue toddler tantrum is tenfold. As my daughter’s mom, I’m the person who is her rock through these emotions she’s experiencing.

Even though tantrums can leave us feeling personally victimized by our tiny humans, it’s up to us to guide them through it.

Here’s some tips on what NOT to do, so that when you come face to face with your next toddler tantrum, you’ll know how not to make it worse.

🫡DONT GIVE INTO DEMANDS

Whatever you do, stay strong. Giving into demands will teach your child that tantrums are the way to go in order for them to get what they want.

🫡 DON’T MINIMIZE THEIR FEELINGS

Because if someone said to me, “it’s not a big deal” when I’m in the middle of having a mental breakdown, I’d keep screaming at them too. Validating and relating to their emotions is key to helping them settle.

🫡DON’T USE PHYSICAL PUNISHMENT

It’s never a good idea, and never solves anything. Physically punishing your child can make them lose trust in you.

If you’re having a hard time finding resolution to your toddlers tantrums, just know you’re not alone. Soon enough, they’ll be able to communicate their feelings more clearly. Until then, stay strong and stay calm!

... Read moreToddler tantrums can be bewildering for parents, often occurring without warning and leaving us feeling overwhelmed. Understanding the root of these outbursts is crucial; they stem from a child's developing emotions and inability to express themselves verbally. During these moments, offering emotional support rather than punishment is key. Here are some effective ways to manage tantrums: 1. **Stay Calm:** It's natural to feel frustrated, but maintaining composure can significantly influence the child's reaction. Speak softly and reassure them that it's okay to feel upset. 2. **Set Boundaries:** Clearly communicate what behaviors are acceptable. Consistent rules help toddlers understand their limits, which can minimize tantrums over time. 3. **Redirect Attention:** When you see a tantrum brewing, try redirecting their focus to a different activity or toy. This distraction can help diffuse the emotional intensity they are experiencing. 4. **Teach Emotion Vocabulary:** As your child grows, help them develop their emotional vocabulary. Teaching words to describe their feelings can empower them to communicate instead of resorting to tantrums. 5. **Positive Reinforcement:** Praise your toddler when they express their feelings appropriately or manage to calm down by themselves. This reinforcement encourages them to continue those behaviors. 6. **Seek Support:** Connect with other parents or professionals for insight and support. Sharing experiences can provide valuable strategies and reassurance. Recognizing that tantrums are a normal part of childhood development can alleviate some pressure from parents. With patience and consistent, loving guidance, both you and your toddler can navigate this challenging phase together.
