Coloring is our Favorite Activity ❤️💙💛

Coloring is one of mine and my daughter’s favorite activity to do together. It provides a strong bonding experience between us, as well as endless opportunities for imaginative learning.

If your child is big enough to hold their own crayon, they are ready to color and scribble their little hearts away!

Introduce your little one to drawing by giving them chunky crayons because they are easier for them to hold.

Around 12 to 15 months of age, your child will have mastered their pincer grasp and are ready to experiment with drawing lines, squiggles, zig zags, and scribbles.

As your kid grows, and becomes more experienced with coloring, the scribbles will turn into marks, patterns, loops, and stripes.

Are you the type of parent that keeps every single thing your kid draws? I’m team throw it away if it ain’t cute 🚮😅

... Read moreI remember when I first introduced crayons to my little one, it felt like such a milestone! We started with regular crayons, but quickly realized chunky crayons were a complete game-changer. They're not just 'easier to hold' – they actually support their developing hand muscles and pincer grasp, which is so crucial around 12 to 15 months. I often think about that phrase, 'Why Is Coloring Great For Children?' and it's so true! It’s not just about keeping them busy; it’s a foundational activity for so many skills. One of the biggest reasons chunky crayons like the ones from Crayola are fantastic is their durability. Toddlers naturally apply a lot of pressure, and regular crayons snap easily, leading to frustration (for both of us!). Chunky crayons stand up to vigorous scribbling, allowing them to explore without interruption. Plus, their larger size means less likelihood of being a choking hazard, which always gives me peace of mind, especially during those early stages when everything goes in the mouth! When we first started, it was all about exploration – making those first lines, squiggles, zig zags, and scribbles. I made sure to provide large sheets of paper, sometimes taped to the table, to give them ample space. This prevents frustration and encourages big, sweeping movements that strengthen their arm and shoulder muscles. I learned quickly that the goal isn't to create a masterpiece but to let them experiment with cause and effect, color, and texture. It's truly amazing to see their eyes light up when they realize they can make a mark on paper! This simple act of drawing also helps them recognize colors and differentiate between them, even if they're just randomly picking them up at first. Don't be afraid of the mess! I always keep a pack of washable chunky crayons on hand. Designating a specific 'art zone' – whether it's a high chair, a small table with a mat, or even just some newspaper spread on the floor – helps contain the creative chaos. It’s amazing to watch their focus as they concentrate on making those first marks. This simple act builds their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and even pre-writing skills without them even realizing it. These early experiences with holding a crayon and making marks are vital stepping stones for future writing and drawing. As they grow, those initial scribbles evolve. You'll start to see more deliberate marks, patterns, and loops. It’s incredible to witness their imagination unfold through color. I always encourage them to tell me about their drawings, even if it just looks like a swirl to me. Asking questions like, "What colors did you use?" or "What is your drawing about?" boosts their language development and self-expression. It validates their efforts and makes them feel proud of their creations, no matter how abstract. Seeing their progress from simple marks to more complex shapes truly highlights the developmental power of coloring. So, grab some chunky crayons, a big sheet of paper, and get ready for some truly wonderful, messy, and memorable bonding time with your toddler!
