Share Your Lemon
Life hands all of us a lemon at some point.
In my family, that lemon was hereditary amyloidosis, a genetic condition we did not even know was running through our bloodline.
There was no warning label and no heads-up.
It was simply something we had to learn, adapt to, and fight through the best way we knew how.
And if you know the Black community, you know how we do.
We take what life gives us, and we still find a way to make something out of it.
It reminds me of that television show “This Is Us”quote:
“Take the sourest lemon life has to offer, and make something resembling lemonade.”
Whew. That hits different when you have lived through anything heavy.
So as I start this space on Lemon8, I want to begin with something simple and human.
🍋 Here is a space to Share Your Lemon. 🍋
What has life handed you, and how are you trying to make it work?
No pressure. No judgment.
Just room for truth, healing, and community.
Even the sour moments can teach us something powerful about resilience, about family, about health, and about ourselves.
And if hereditary amyloidosis or heart issues run in your family, this page is especially for you.
We are building community, clarity, and culture here, one story at a time.

Life’s unexpected challenges often come without a warning, much like hereditary amyloidosis—a genetic condition that can deeply impact families, especially within the Black community. This invisible illness, along with related heart issues, underscores the importance of understanding family health history and advocating for early screening and education. Living with hereditary amyloidosis means navigating symptoms that may affect the heart and other organs, making community support crucial. The #hATTRNextGen movement highlights stories of individuals and families facing this condition, building awareness and fostering healing among those affected. Sharing personal experiences, as encouraged by the "Share Your Lemon" space, creates a nurturing environment where people can find empathy and strength. In health and in life, turning the sour lemons into something positive is a powerful approach. Strategies such as joining support groups, seeking specialized medical care, and staying informed about genetic risks can empower those living with hereditary amyloidosis. Moreover, discussing such conditions openly helps reduce stigma and encourages others to monitor their personal and family wellness proactively. Beyond hereditary amyloidosis, the resilience reflected here represents broader themes of overcoming adversity, particularly within the Black community where health disparities persist. By sharing these stories under hashtags like #BlackHealthVoices and #HealingInCommunity, individuals contribute to a culture of truth, mutual aid, and empowerment. This collective experience reminds us that even when life hands us the sourest lemons, with honesty, courage, and community support, we can make something resembling lemonade.
