The colors in this set are not random. They reflect both my ethnic heritage and my genetic story.
The burgundy ribbon represents amyloidosis awareness. Burgundy symbolizes all forms of amyloidosis and the visibility we are still working to bring to a disease that too often goes unrecognized.
The black represents my race.
The green and white represent the Nigerian flag. My DNA shows strong West African ancestry, with Nigeria as the largest regional connection.
That connection carries meaning beyond culture. A gene variant linked to hereditary ATTR amyloidosis with cardiomyopathy is more commonly found in people with West African ancestry.
My family did not know this history was in our genes. I lost my father to hereditary amyloidosis affecting his heart.
Today I know that I carry the same gene variant.
These nails tell my story, but they also serve a purpose.
Sometimes art can open the door to conversations people might not otherwise have. If a manicure can start a conversation about family health history, genetic risk, or rare disease awareness, then it has done something meaningful.
For me, this is one small way to help my community become aware of a risk many families do not yet know exists.
