The Possibility.

I’ve used the sun in my #hATTRNextGen ® logo for a while now…

but I’ve never fully explained why.

A book changed the way I think about legacy and movement:

The Warmth of Other Suns.

It documents the history of Black Americans who left the South in search of something better.

Not because it was easy.

Not because it was guaranteed.

But because they believed there had to be more.

That made me think differently about my grandparents…

what they carried, what they left behind, and what they hoped to create.

And the title stayed with me.

The “warmth of other suns.”

Not just sunlight…

but dignity, opportunity, and the possibility of a different life.

That’s what the sun represents for me.

Because movement didn’t stop then.

Today it looks like:

knowing your family history

asking questions

seeking answers

doing something different with what we’ve inherited

Warmth. Direction. Possibility.

The metaphor extends beyond just light and warmth to symbolize dignity, opportunity, and the quest for a better life—something I resonate with on a personal level. Growing up, I often thought about how our family histories shape who we are today. The journey of Black Americans moving from the South captured in The Warmth of Other Suns mirrors the courage it takes to seek answers and create change, even when the path is uncertain. This theme of 'believing there has to be more' is something I see as essential not only in historical contexts but also in our health journeys, especially within communities affected by conditions like amyloidosis. In my experience, understanding family health history is crucial to unlocking awareness and action. Asking questions and seeking answers about our inherited traits is not just about medical insight but also about honoring the efforts and sacrifices of previous generations. The warmth of the sun represents this ongoing movement—towards knowledge, health equity, and empowerment. Moreover, joining communities like #hATTRNextGen and supporting #AmyloidosisAwareness reinforces the importance of collective action. It creates a welcoming space where stories and information are shared, and where people feel inspired to do something different with what they’ve inherited—be it health challenges or cultural legacies. Incorporating these reflections into daily life encourages us to keep moving forward with warmth, direction, and possibility. It is a reminder that every step we take honors the past while shaping the future for ourselves and generations to come.
