The Right Fit!
Looking back on my own healthcare experiences, both acute and chronic, I have had providers who listened deeply, investigated thoroughly, and helped move my care forward in meaningful ways.
I have also had moments where I realized I needed to advocate strongly for myself so I did not get lost in the process.
We spend so much time in life looking for the right fit.
The right home.
The right school.
The right job.
Even the right restaurant for dinner.
So why would healthcare be the one area where we feel guilty for wanting a relationship that works well for us?
This is not about disrespecting healthcare professionals. Many truly care and are doing the best they can within difficult systems and time constraints.
But it is also okay to recognize when communication is not working, when concerns repeatedly feel dismissed, or when you do not feel like an active participant in your care.
You deserve a healthcare relationship built on listening, collaboration, investigation, and trust.
And if needed, it is okay to seek a provider who is a better fit for your needs and communication style.
The goal is not conflict. The goal is better outcomes.

From my own healthcare journey, I've learned that feeling heard and supported by your provider can make a tremendous difference in your health outcomes. It’s not uncommon to experience moments where despite clear communication, you still feel unheard or dismissed. This can be frustrating and sometimes even dangerous if it stops you from actively participating in your care. In navigating this, I realized that just like we search for the right home, job, or school, we should also prioritize finding a healthcare provider whose communication style aligns with our needs. A provider who listens deeply, addresses concerns thoroughly, and partners with you to investigate your symptoms can transform your care experience. Self-advocacy is crucial. I found that when concerns were repeatedly overlooked, speaking up was necessary—not to create conflict but to foster a relationship built on mutual respect and trust. Healthcare should be a collaborative journey where both parties contribute. If you ever feel like you don’t move forward or your concerns go unheard, it’s okay to seek a provider who better fits your expectations. It's also valuable to remember that healthcare professionals often operate under significant time and systemic constraints. This makes finding the right fit even more critical to ensure your care is personalized and effective. Ultimately, the goal is better health outcomes through effective communication and trust. Don’t feel guilty for wanting a relationship that works well for you—in healthcare, just as in life, the right fit matters.
