Trust is Earned.
People often ask why trust in healthcare and research can be difficult in the Black community.
Yes, history matters. But so do the experiences many of us are having today.
It’s being overlooked.
It’s not being listened to.
It’s feeling like you have to fight to be taken seriously.
As someone who has spent years working in clinical research and is also a hereditary ATTR amyloidosis gene carrier, I’ve seen this conversation from both sides.
That perspective inspired my newest article with Health Union, where I reflect on what it means to trust research and why earning trust is just as important as asking for it.

Trust in healthcare and clinical research is a complex issue, especially within the Black community. While historical abuses in medical research are well-known contributors to mistrust, it's equally important to recognize the ongoing experiences that perpetuate these feelings. Many individuals report feeling overlooked or dismissed by healthcare providers, which can create a barrier to participating in clinical trials and receiving appropriate care. From my own experiences in clinical research, I’ve learned that transparency and genuine engagement are essential for building confidence. Patients want to feel heard and respected rather than just another data point. There is often a perceived need to 'fight' to be taken seriously, which discourages many from seeking care or contributing to research that could ultimately benefit them and their communities. Consequently, earning trust requires consistent effort beyond acknowledging past wrongs. It involves creating culturally sensitive communication, ensuring diversity in clinical trial recruitment, and fostering long-term relationships based on respect and accountability. Organizations and researchers must listen actively to the concerns and lived realities of Black participants to address barriers and misconceptions. Moreover, hereditary conditions like ATTR amyloidosis illustrate how trust in research can directly affect patient outcomes. When individuals feel confident about clinical studies, they are more likely to engage, leading to better understanding of diseases and development of effective treatments. In my journey as a gene carrier and advocate, I’ve seen both sides—the challenges faced by patients and the dedication of researchers striving for equity. Sharing these perspectives underscores the critical importance of trust as a two-way street: it must be earned through transparency, respect, and meaningful dialogue rather than merely requested. Patients, advocates, and healthcare professionals all have roles in fostering this trust, which is vital to achieving health equity and improving outcomes for underrepresented communities.
