Living at Home During College 🏡

Living off campus at home has more benefits than some may like to admit. As someone who lived in a dorm and decided to commute from home for my remaining 3 years it was the best decision I ever made. I thrived being around family because I had a constant support system and flexibility in my schedule constantly. I was still able to attend school events and hang out with friends regularly so living off campus did not take away from my college experience. Do what’s best for you and don’t let others make you feel bad about not living in a dorm it’s not for everyone!

Read moreDeciding where to live during college is a huge personal choice, and while my original post highlighted the many benefits I personally experienced, it's also important to look at the full picture—the 'pros and cons' that many of you are searching for. As someone who transitioned from dorm life to commuting, I can genuinely say it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, but for me, the advantages far outweighed the drawbacks. One of the biggest 'pros' I discovered, and something the OCR really emphasized, was the incredible 'SUPPORT SYSTEM AT YOUR FINGERTIPS'. Having my family around meant I never felt truly alone or overwhelmed. This constant emotional and practical backing profoundly affected my 'MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL WELL-BEING MORE THAN YOU REALIZE'. Whether it was a home-cooked meal after a tough exam or just someone to chat with, that feeling of belonging was priceless during a transformative time. Another undeniable benefit was the financial aspect. The OCR mentioned how 'DORMS, TRANSPORTATION, AND MEAL COSTS ADD UP EASILY COMPARED TO LIVING AT HOME WHERE YOU CAN SAVE MONEY.' This was absolutely true for me. By not paying for dorm rent and meal plans, and often reducing daily transport costs, I was able to save a significant amount of money. This allowed me to focus more on my studies without the added stress of looming debt, or even put money aside for future endeavors. The 'LIMITED DISTRACTIONS' I found at home also played a crucial role in helping me 'MASTER YOUR TIME WISELY BETWEEN SCHOOL, WORK, AND HOBBIES'. Unlike a busy dorm, I could truly create a dedicated study space, much like the desk setup you see in one of the images, allowing for focused academic work. This increased productivity meant I had more time for friends, campus events, and my personal interests, debunking the myth that living at home isolates you. However, it’s only fair to address some potential 'cons' or challenges. The social aspect can sometimes feel a bit different. While I made sure to attend school events and hang out with friends, it definitely required more intentional planning than just walking down the hall in a dorm. You might have to make a conscious effort to stay connected and be present on campus, especially if your friends live in dorms. Another potential drawback is the commute itself. Depending on where you live, transportation can eat into your day. While I saved on costs, the time spent traveling was something I had to factor in. My tip? Use that commute time wisely – listen to educational podcasts, review notes, or simply decompress. Finally, the balance between independence and living under your family's roof can be a learning curve. Setting clear boundaries and communicating openly with your family about your college schedule and needs is essential to ensure everyone feels respected and supported. It’s important to remember that this choice is about finding what helps you thrive, balancing the incredible benefits with a realistic approach to potential challenges. My journey proved that living at home can be incredibly rewarding, but it does require thoughtful planning and communication.

It is so relieving to hear someone say this. People judge for not living in a dorm and makes me feel like I can’t live off campus 🫠
