I am currently reading The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. I am only halfway through this book, there is a lot more unpacking and discovering to do with the characters and the story but this is my current take so far.
We follow our main character named Sybil and the letters she writes and receives. I’d say one of the biggest themes in this book is the power and intimacy in written words to either loved ones or strangers, the connections we have to others and how small exchanges between one another can carry such deep emotional weight. But overall, I feel this introspective novel is mainly about loneliness.
Writing letters is a momentary reprieve from the feeling of not being seen or understood. It’s an incredible outlet, a way to seek intimacy without proximity.
We all live in our heads, our thoughts, our memories, our deeply-sealed and unsaid feelings. Writing letters isn’t a cure for loneliness, it doesn’t erase loneliness but it certainly acts as lovely, lovely relief. This book certainly makes me want to pull out paper and pens and start handwriting letters to my loved ones. 💌
