And obviously I think the books were better than the movies.
Having reread the entire Hunger Games series as an adult, I found a new layer of meaning that went beyond the thrilling dystopian plot. Suzanne Collins crafts not only a gripping narrative but also explores complex themes like courage, loss, and human nature. For example, Catching Fire really resonated with me as it challenges the reader to confront fear and fight back, embodying the courage that defines the series. The quote, "At some point, you have to stop running and turn around and face whoever wants you dead," truly encapsulates this spirit. Mockingjay was more difficult to digest due to its darker tone and heavier themes, but it left a lasting impact with its portrayal of resilience and the painful cost of war and rebellion. This part of the series made me appreciate how compelling and emotionally rich young adult novels can be when they don't shy away from hard truths. I was initially uncomfortable reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but in retrospect, I believe that discomfort was necessary. It delves into the origins of key characters and the making of complex moral choices, deepening the overall experience of the Hunger Games universe. The added novel Sunrise on the Reaping offers a poignant backstory to Haymitch and adds depth to the original trilogy’s narrative. It emphasized how personal loss shapes characters, making the larger story feel more intimate and raw. Overall, my experience reading the series multiple times, from a young reader to an adult, revealed how Suzanne Collins' work masterfully balances thrilling action with profound explorations of humanity. This is why, to me, the books remain far superior to their movie adaptations, providing richer character development and emotional complexity.
