From personal experience, I’ve seen how having more than one dependent in the home sometimes triggers concerns with IHSS supervisors who worry about the adequacy of supervision. This often leads to denial or reduction of protective supervision hours, which can be frustrating and stressful for caregivers. One key point is that IHSS protective supervision is designed to ensure the safety of individuals who require monitoring due to conditions like autism or developmental disabilities. However, when a home has several residents, including minors, IHSS evaluators sometimes assume that supervision needs are naturally covered by the presence of other household members. This assumption can overlook the actual risks and specific needs of each individual. To address this, I learned it’s crucial to provide detailed documentation and personal statements explaining why protective supervision is still necessary despite multiple residents. This can include descriptions of behaviors that require constant monitoring, the specific vulnerabilities of individuals with autism, and why general presence of others does not equate to effective supervision. Submission of professional assessments or recommendations from healthcare providers also strengthens the case. Additionally, families should actively engage with IHSS supervisors to clarify their unique situations and advocate for their needs. Regular communication, timely reporting of changes in household composition, and persistence in requesting reevaluations when necessary are important steps. Overall, while IHSS protective supervision policies aim to balance safety with resource allocation, families with multiple residents facing denials should not feel discouraged. Sharing your experiences, seeking community support, and being thorough in appeals can help secure the supervision hours needed to support your loved ones safely at home.
