I used to cry on Monday mornings

I used to cry in my car on the way to work on Monday mornings.

I wasn’t lazy. I wasn’t ungrateful.

I was exhausted.

I was working a corporate job I hated, stressing over money, and wondering how I was supposed to survive another 20+ years doing the same thing while bills kept climbing.

I remember thinking:

Is this really adulthood?

Work all week. Worry all weekend. Repeat.

For a long time, I thought my only option was to find another job.

What changed for me was realizing I needed to learn different ways to create income instead of relying on one paycheck forever.

I’m still learning. Still building. But I’m not crying on Monday mornings anymore.

If you’re a burnt out Gen Xer feeling stuck financially or wondering if it’s too late to start over… I see you. 🩷

... Read moreI completely relate to the feeling of dreading Monday mornings to the point of tears. It’s not laziness or ingratitude — it’s sheer exhaustion from the relentless cycle of working a job that drains your spirit while bills and financial stress pile up. When I faced this reality, like the author, I questioned if this was truly what adulthood meant: working all week, worrying all weekend, just to make ends meet. One of the biggest turning points was shifting my mindset from relying solely on a corporate paycheck to exploring additional income streams. This doesn’t mean quitting your job immediately; it means learning and experimenting with ways to supplement your income. For some, this might be side hustles like freelancing, online selling, or investing. For others, it might involve building a business or monetizing a passion. What helped me the most was embracing continuous learning and not giving up even if progress was slow. Joining supportive communities of people in similar situations (#burntout, #extraincome, #womenover40) can also provide encouragement and practical advice. The reality for many Gen Xers and women over 40 is that it’s never too late to start over financially or career-wise. The key is to take small steps consistently, be patient with yourself, and recognize that exhaustion doesn’t have to be a permanent state. By gradually building new income sources, Monday mornings can become a time of renewed energy and optimism instead of tears. If you’re feeling stuck or burnt out, know that your feelings are valid and there are paths forward. Prioritize self-care, seek financial education, and connect with others who understand your journey—the transformation is absolutely possible.
