Before you trust the internet, read this.
I’ve seen a lot of people talk about the dangers of the internet, but I never really experienced them before.
So here are some internet dangers based on my personal experience.
There are many risks online, but these are the ones I’ve actually gone through.
1️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸
You might think, “Why would I even post my workplace?”
In my case, my company was hiring, so I shared it on my Instagram story just like my friend did at a different company.
But later on, someone used that information against me.
I won’t go into too much detail.
2️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲
If you really want to share, posting it on a story is a bit safer since it disappears after 24 hours. ( Unless you add it to highlights)
That said, people can still screenshot your stories and share them.
I know someone who posted a full family photo even though his account was private.
People can still share it and figure out how many family members he has and what they look like.
Some can even find out their school or workplace using tools like Google Lens.
3️⃣ 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 ( 𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 )
A lot of times, some guys may think you want something more just because you seem very eager to make friends.
If you’re only looking for friendship, make that clear from the start.
4️⃣ 𝗗𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝘀𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝘆 𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 ( 𝗨𝗻𝗹𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗺)
This happened to my mom’s friend.
She’s very wealthy, and another friend of hers who’s a single mom found out about it and started asking for more and more money.
When my mom’s friend refused to lend her $9,500, she got upset and felt entitled to it just because she knew she was rich.
The thing is, my mom’s friend had already helped her many times before.
5️⃣ 𝗕𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 ( 𝗙𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗱𝘀 )
I used to be in a close friend group, and I genuinely thought one of them was my best friend.
I told her almost everything, including my crush.
But because of personal reasons I won’t share, she ended up backstabbing me and leaked our private chats and my phone number to her Instagram followers.
Even though her account was private, that was still extremely disrespectful.
From my own journey navigating the internet, I've realized that understanding and managing online boundaries is crucial. One important thing I've learned is the significance of controlling privacy settings rigorously. Even if your account is private, like I mentioned about stories or photos, screenshots can still be taken and shared without your permission. Using features such as close friends lists on Instagram or restricting story viewers can add a useful layer of security. Additionally, when it comes to networking or making friends online, clear communication is essential. I recently joined several hobby groups on social media, and I always state upfront whether I'm there just to share interests or looking for deeper connections. It helps avoid misunderstandings or unwanted attention, especially for women who may face more risks. Another insight is to be cautious with the information you share about your financial status or location. I once shared a vague location tag and later realized someone was using that info to guess when I wasn’t home. That underscored for me how much casual sharing can lead to privacy compromises. Finally, the experience of betrayal by someone trusted online can be deeply hurtful and eye-opening. It taught me the importance of not oversharing sensitive information, even within close circles, and to always consider the potential consequences before putting personal details on social platforms. The phrase I came across—"I didn't think the internet could hurt me... until it did"—perfectly captures how surprises lurk online. By taking thoughtful steps like managing what you post about where you work or who you trust, and setting clear boundaries, you can better safeguard your digital life while still enjoying the benefits the internet offers.

man sorry you had to go through all that. mus
