Duckling’s 1st Pea Party! 🎉

Okay, so our ducklings' first pea party was a huge hit, and they absolutely LOVED it! But what else can we do to keep these little fluff balls happy and thriving? I've been experimenting with different enrichment ideas, and let me tell you, it makes a world of difference for their development and overall joy. Beyond just raising their water dish – which is a game-changer for keeping their bedding dry, by the way – I've found that supervised water play is paramount. I like to fill a shallow pan or a plastic storage bin with just an inch or two of water. Seeing them splash around, dunking their heads, and cleaning their little bills is just the cutest thing. Sometimes, I'll even toss in a few more defrosted peas or some chopped-up greens into the water for a fun 'fishing' game. It's an awesome source of exercise and helps build their leg strength! Another thing I've noticed is how much they love to explore. We set up a safe, supervised outdoor space for them when the weather is warm enough. Just a small patch of grass or a shallow tray of clean sand provides endless entertainment. They love to peck around, searching for tiny bugs, or just digging their bills into the soft earth. It's so natural for them! Inside, I sometimes scatter a small handful of their regular food or, you guessed it, more peas on a clean towel or a piece of turf mat. This encourages their natural foraging instincts, keeping their minds active and preventing boredom. Remember how they LOVED it when we gave them peas? This extends that joy into a daily activity. You wouldn't think ducklings need toys, but they do! Simple things can be incredibly stimulating. I've used crinkly paper balls (make sure they can't ingest them!), small, soft floating toys in their water, or even just a mirror placed safely near their brooder. They seem fascinated by their own reflections! Introducing different textures is also great – a small patch of artificial turf, a smooth rock (too big to swallow), or even a clean, damp towel can be new sensory experiences for them. It's all about providing variety to keep their curious minds engaged. And speaking of niacin, while peas are an awesome source, don't forget brewer's yeast can also be sprinkled on their feed for an extra boost, especially during rapid growth phases. It truly supports their leg health, which is so important for these active little birds. Finally, remember that ducklings are highly social creatures. If you're getting ducks, it's always best to get more than one. They thrive on companionship and will preen each other and huddle together for comfort. My ducklings seem happiest when they're together, exploring or napping. Always supervise any new enrichment activities, especially with water or small objects, to ensure their safety. Watching them live their best lives and providing these little joys is truly rewarding!
