How to not kill your Alocasia corms

2025/8/7 Edited to

... Read moreHey plant friends! We've all been there, scratching our heads when our beautiful Alocasia starts looking a little sad. Often, the culprit lies beneath the soil, specifically with rootbound conditions or how we handle those precious corms. Let's dive into some common issues and how to keep your Alocasia – especially those gorgeous Alocasia Melo – thriving! Understanding Rootbound Conditions and Your Alocasia's Leaf Health One common reason for Alocasia distress, particularly impacting leaf health, is when it becomes rootbound. What does this mean exactly? It's when the plant's roots have completely filled its pot, forming a dense, tangled mass with little to no space for soil. While some plants don't mind being slightly rootbound, Alocasias, especially varieties like Alocasia Melo, often suffer. I once noticed my Alocasia Melo's stunning leaves were starting to dull and even yellow on the edges, and new growth was much smaller than usual. Upon inspection, it was completely rootbound! When an Alocasia is rootbound, its roots can't absorb water and nutrients efficiently from the soil because there simply isn't enough soil or space. This leads to nutrient deficiencies, dehydration, and overall stress for the plant. You might see symptoms like: Yellowing or browning leaves: A classic sign of nutrient problems or underwatering (even if you're watering regularly, the roots can't take it up). Stunted growth: New leaves are smaller or growth slows down significantly. Drooping leaves: The plant can't maintain turgor due to lack of water absorption. Roots growing out of drainage holes: The most obvious sign! To fix a rootbound Alocasia, the solution is usually repotting. Choose a pot that's only one or two inches larger in diameter. Gently remove the plant, loosen the root ball a bit (some people even gently prune circling roots), and repot with fresh, well-draining soil. This gives the roots room to grow, access to new nutrients, and improves water uptake, leading to happier, healthier leaves! Handling Alocasia Corms Removed from Soil Another scenario that often comes up is dealing with Alocasia corms that have been removed from the soil. Maybe you're repotting, propagating, or found some extra corms while cleaning up your plant. The first time I dug up an Alocasia corm, I was so nervous! But it's actually quite simple once you know the steps. After gently detaching the corms from the mother plant or removing them from old soil, the first step is to clean them. Carefully brush off any remaining soil and inspect them for any soft spots, which could indicate rot. If you find rot, use a sterilized knife or scissors to cut away the affected part until only healthy, firm tissue remains. Next, you'll want to allow the corms to 'callus over.' This means letting them air dry for 1-2 days in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight. This helps prevent fungal infections when you replant them. Once callused, you have a few options for replanting or storing: Replanting for growth: Plant the corm shallowly in a small pot with a well-draining, airy substrate like a mix of perlite, sphagnum moss, and a bit of potting soil. Keep the substrate consistently moist but not soggy, and place it in a warm spot with indirect light. Many people even put them in a prop box or use a heat mat to encourage sprouting. It can take weeks or even months, so patience is key! Storage for dormancy: If your Alocasia goes dormant or you want to store corms for later, you can keep them in a cool, dark, dry place, nestled in a bit of dry sphagnum moss or perlite. Just make sure they don't get too cold or too warm. By understanding these key aspects of Alocasia care, you'll be well on your way to a thriving, vibrant plant collection. Happy growing!
