Why Your Rosemary Cuttings Keep Rotting ✨

2 days agoEdited to

... Read moreFrom my experience with propagating Mediterranean herbs like rosemary, I've seen firsthand that the common practice of placing fresh cuttings directly into water can lead to disappointing results. Unlike pothos or other tropical plants that thrive with constant moisture, rosemary is adapted to dry, rocky soil where its roots almost never remain wet for long periods. When you take a rosemary cutting, the end is essentially an open wound. If you immediately submerge it in water, bacteria and fungi quickly take advantage, causing rot before roots even have a chance to develop. I've found it far more effective to select vigorous, green stems and let the cut end dry out for one or two days. This drying time forms a natural protective barrier, reducing the risk of rot. Additionally, rosemary cuttings require fast-draining propagation mediums that mimic their native environment. Using a mix heavy in sand or perlite helps avoid waterlogged soil. Maintaining good air circulation and avoiding overwatering are also key steps to promote healthy root growth. Propagation success improved dramatically in my garden as I shifted to these dryer, more Mediterranean-inspired conditions. It’s a great reminder that understanding a plant’s natural habitat is crucial for effective propagation. Rosemary prefers dry air and quick drainage, so replicating these conditions is essential to prevent rot and encourage thriving new plants.
