no one really tells you there are so many unspoken rules here… you just kind of figure it out as you go 😭

like yes, you can cross the street on red… but should you?? absolutely not if anyone is watching

and being “on time” doesn’t mean walking in right on the dot… it means already being there

it’s honestly one of those things that feels strict at first, but once you get used to it, it just makes life run smoother

still learning daily though 🫡

... Read moreLiving in Germany has taught me how small cultural nuances can make a big difference in daily life. One of the first unspoken rules I realized was about crossing the street. While jaywalking might be common elsewhere, here it’s considered disrespectful and can draw judgment even if the street seems clear. Sticking to the red light rule not only adheres to laws but shows respect for others’ safety. Punctuality goes beyond just arriving on time—it means being a few minutes early. This often caught me off guard because in some cultures, arriving exactly at the scheduled time is fine. In Germany, being early signals respect for others’ time and commitments. Another rule I adapted to was waste separation. It seemed complicated at first with multiple bins for paper, plastic, organic waste, and others. But once I understood it, it actually made me more mindful about recycling and sustainability. Carrying cash consistently was also surprising. Despite widespread card payment options elsewhere, many places here prefer cash and some don’t accept cards at all. So always having cash handy helps avoid inconvenience. Lastly, greeting people upon entering a room or shop is more important than I expected. Even a simple "Guten Tag" can help break the ice and shows politeness. At first, I felt awkward, but it became second nature and made social interactions smoother. Adapting to these unspoken rules took some effort, but embracing them allowed me to connect better with locals and enjoy life more fully in Germany. Every day I’m still learning, and these customs have taught me the importance of subtle respect and consideration in any culture.
