Instead of reaching for chemical sprays in the garden, I often let my free-range girls, like the ever-vigilant Goldie, have supervised access to certain areas. They love to scratch for bugs, slugs, and other garden pests, keeping the ecosystem balanced without any harmful chemicals. And their droppings? Pure gold for the garden! Chicken manure is packed with nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, essential nutrients that help my plants thrive. This means I rarely need to buy synthetic fertilizers, further reducing my reliance on industrial processes that have their own carbon costs. Having these three delightful hens, Betty White, Goldie, and Chickaletta, has truly opened my eyes to the practicalities of sustainable living, even in an urban environment. It's not just about the tangible benefits; it’s also about fostering a deeper connection to where our food comes from and embracing a more self-sufficient lifestyle.
