Diy cat shelter for the cats

With the cold weather coming, I’ve been working on making cozy DIY shelters for the stray cats around here — so they have a warm, safe spot to sleep 🏠💛

You don’t need much to make one! Here’s what you’ll need:

Large plastic storage bin or Styrofoam cooler

Smaller bin to fit inside (optional for extra insulation)

Straw (NOT hay — straw keeps them warm and dry!)

Duct tape or zip ties

A box cutter to cut a small entrance hole

Blanket or tarp to cover it for extra protection

These shelters can make the difference between life and death for outdoor cats in cold nights ❄️🐱

If anyone would like to help me make more shelters or donate supplies, I’d be so grateful 🙏

💛 [You can donate through my wishlist or CashApp link here if you’d like to help more kitties stay warm this winter.]

... Read moreThe cold weather always makes me think about the stray cats in our community. Every year, I try to do my part to help them stay warm and safe, and I've found that building a DIY cat shelter from a cooler or a large plastic storage bin is one of the most effective and affordable ways to make a real difference. It's incredibly rewarding to know you've provided a cozy spot for a little one to escape the elements. Initially, I worried it would be complicated, but it's surprisingly simple, even for someone like me who isn't super handy! The key is using materials that are readily available and provide good insulation and weather protection. A sturdy plastic storage bin or an old cooler works wonders because they're already waterproof and offer a basic insulated shell. The OCR results from my photos reminded me of how essential these basic materials are. Why a Cooler or Plastic Bin Works Best I’ve tried various DIY methods, but the cooler or plastic storage bin approach consistently comes out on top. These items are: Weatherproof: They naturally repel water and snow, keeping the inside dry. This is crucial as dampness makes the cold much more dangerous. Insulative: The thick walls of a cooler, especially, provide excellent insulation against chilling winds and low temperatures. If you use a plastic storage bin, you can easily add extra insulation, which I'll explain below. Durable: They can withstand harsh weather conditions, offering a long-lasting shelter solution. Cost-Effective: Often, you might have an old cooler or plastic storage bin lying around, or you can find one affordably at a second-hand store. My Step-by-Step Method for a Warmer Shelter When I first started, I just cut a hole and threw some old blankets in, but I quickly learned better! Here’s what I do now, incorporating the best tips I’ve picked up along the way, including some details from the OCR images that show more advanced insulation: Gather Your Materials: Beyond the main plastic storage bin or cooler, you'll need a smaller container that can fit inside (if you want extra insulation), straw (and never hay or blankets, as they absorb moisture), heavy-duty duct tape, a box cutter, and a marker. For added insulation, as suggested by the OCR, foam sheets or panels cut to size can be incredibly effective. Prepare the Outer Container: Choose a sturdy plastic storage bin or a cooler. I usually aim for one that’s at least 30-40 gallons for a single cat, allowing them enough space to turn around but not too much that their body heat can't warm it up. On one of the shorter sides, about 3-4 inches from the bottom, I use a marker to draw a 6-inch diameter circle or a 5x5 inch square for the entrance, as the OCR mentioned a 5-inch square. This size is big enough for cats but small enough to deter larger predators and keep warmth inside. Carefully use your box cutter to cut out the opening. Always be cautious and use a cutting mat or sturdy surface underneath. Add Inner Insulation (Optional but Highly Recommended): If you have a smaller plastic bin, place it inside the larger one after cutting the entrance. The space between the two bins can be filled with foam sheets, crumpled newspaper, or even old shredded Styrofoam to create an air pocket, which is fantastic for insulation. Secure the inner bin with duct tape or strong adhesive so it doesn't shift. If you aren't using a second bin, you can line the inside walls of the single bin with foam panels, securing them with duct tape. Bedding is Key: Use STRAW! This is perhaps the most important tip. Straw is hollow, allowing it to trap air and provide excellent insulation. It also resists moisture and doesn't mold like fabric can. I fill the bottom of the shelter with a generous layer of clean, dry straw – enough for the cat to burrow into. Avoid hay, old towels, or blankets; they absorb moisture, freeze, and become breeding grounds for bacteria, making the shelter colder and unhygienic. Weatherproof and Secure: Once the straw is in, you can seal any gaps or rough edges around the entrance with duct tape. If using a lid, ensure it fits snugly. For extra protection against rain and wind, I often drape a heavy-duty tarp or an old blanket over the entire shelter, securing it with bricks or heavy stones so it doesn't blow away. This adds another layer of insulation and camouflage. Placement and Maintenance Tips I always try to place these shelters in a discreet, sheltered spot, like under a porch, behind a shed, or tucked away against a building, away from direct wind and heavy foot traffic. Elevating the shelter slightly off the ground with a few bricks can prevent ground cold and moisture from seeping in. It's also a good idea to check the shelters periodically, especially after heavy rain or snow, to ensure the straw is dry and to replenish it if needed. Seeing a cat curled up in one of these shelters makes all the effort worthwhile. It's a small act of kindness that truly saves lives when the temperatures drop. Every little bit of help, even just sharing this idea, can make a huge difference for our community cats!
