Kitchen Tip #9
Wrap lettuce in a slightly damp paper towel
Store in Ziploc bag to keep fresh longer
From my experience using this method, the key to maintaining lettuce freshness is balancing moisture without letting it get soggy. After removing the core and rinsing the leaves gently, I lightly dampen a paper towel – not soaking wet – to wrap the lettuce. Then placing it in a resealable Ziploc bag helps seal in the moisture just right, preventing wilting and drying out. I’ve found that keeping the bag slightly open or poking a few small holes can also help with airflow and avoid excess condensation, which sometimes causes leaves to rot. Another tip I use is storing the bag in the crisper drawer of the refrigerator, where the temperature and humidity are optimized for leafy greens. This method has worked well for me even with different types of lettuce, such as Romaine and leaf lettuce, extending freshness well beyond the typical 3-5 day span. By saving wilted lettuce from the trash, it has also reduced food waste and saved me trips to the store. If you want to take freshness further, consider rotating out the paper towel to keep it clean and slightly damp every few days. This little maintenance helps keep the lettuce crisp and appetizing for over two weeks. Overall, this simple kitchen tip is a game-changer for anyone looking to enjoy fresh salads longer and reduce kitchen waste with minimal effort.
