🎶 Wedding Music: Honest Review of Reception March-In Songs (Part 2)

Gosh, I’m feeling bereft now that wedding planning is over and I have nothing else to obsessively plan for (for now).

So here I am, finally, with Part 2 of my Hot Takes on popular wedding march-in songs.

Read at your own discretion.

5️⃣ All of Me - John Legend

I mean, many lists include this as a popular march-in song.

I can see why - the lyrics speak of loving someone and their imperfections.

But how does this lyric, “You're crazy and I'm out of my mind” belong in a wedding?

It sounds more like it belongs in therapy.

4️⃣ A Moment Like This - Leona Lewis

Perfectly pleasant.

But a bit too.. belt-ey for my taste.

Maybe I’m just not a fan of walking down the aisle to another woman demolishing her high notes in the background.

3️⃣ From This Moment On - Shania Twain

Another romantic, lyric-appropriate song.

Would be completely inoffensive if played at a wedding.

What gave me pause are the lyrics:

“And you're the answer to my prayers from up above

All we need is just the two of us

My dreams came true because of you”.

Well, no - I have dreams beyond that of my husband.

I need more than just him. I also need things like money, food, and a roof over my head.

Suffice to say, I’m not a fan of hyperbole.

2️⃣ Beautiful in White - Shane Filan

Actually a very beautiful march-in song.

The lyrics are poetic, romantic, and evoke a vivid imagery.

If I had to choose a modern pop song for my march-in, this would be my pick.

I just find it slightly one-sided, because it’s entirely only from the groom’s POV.

1️⃣ Canon in D - Pachelbel

A timeless classic for a reason.

No lyrics, so no risk of offending the proceedings.

The gradual build also makes it wonderfully suited for a processional.

But so overplayed that I vowed that I will never play Canon in D at my own wedding.

Anything. But. Canon in D.

Absolutely no regrets.

The Baroque era has so many more beautiful pieces to offer.

Anyway, these are just my opinions.

March in to whatever song makes you happy.

It’s your day, after all.

(Even if it is Canon in D.)

While traditional choices like Pachelbel's "Canon in D" are timeless and elegant due to their instrumental nature and gradual build, I noticed they can feel a bit overdone by the time your big day arrives. It's refreshing to consider lesser-known Baroque pieces or modern songs with meaningful lyrics. For instance, Shane Filan's "Beautiful in White" resonates with many for its poetic and romantic lyrics that paint vivid imagery, making it a beautiful pick for a contemporary wedding march-in. However, I realized that the perspective being solely from the groom's point of view might not fully represent the couple's mutual journey. This led me to explore songs that better encapsulate both partners' experiences. Songs like John Legend's "All of Me," though popular, require careful lyric consideration. Its line "You're crazy and I'm out of my mind" might add a quirky touch for some, but could feel less fitting in a formal wedding atmosphere. Similarly, Leona Lewis's "A Moment Like This" provides a powerful vocal performance but might be too dramatic for a calm procession. Ultimately, I learned that choosing a march-in song is a deeply personal decision. It's essential to balance lyrical content, musical style, and emotional connection. For anyone planning their wedding, I recommend listening closely to the lyrics and imagining how the song sets the tone as you walk down the aisle. Don't be afraid to think beyond traditional choices—sometimes an unexpected piece can make your moment even more memorable. Remember, your wedding day reflection in music should celebrate your unique story. Whether you favor a classical instrumental, a modern love ballad, or something unconventional, the perfect march-in song is one that genuinely makes you happy and feels right for your special day.
