Dance—especially barefoot dancing—creates a powerful connection to the ground beneath us, fostering a sense of safety and presence. When we shake our hips, close our eyes, or laugh with others, it activates more than just our muscles. It awakens self-expression, emotional release, and breath awareness, much like the core ideas of breathwork and movement as medicine. Incorporating breathwork during these movement sessions can deepen the healing experience. Conscious breathing helps regulate the nervous system, making it easier to access and release suppressed feelings. This combination of breath and movement aligns well with the concept that healing should be light-hearted and creative rather than heavy or forced. The phrase ‘Shimmy Shakedown’ resonates here—as a metaphor for shaking off stress and old emotional patterns.
