It was a rainy Thursday evening when he came to pick me up after my appointment.
He was thinking of having either fine dining or traditional steamboat and I chose traditional steamboat because it felt more apt at that moment.
Lao You Ji Fishhead Steamboat Seafood Restaurant is a regular roadside shop that sells one of my favourite stir fried beehoon and 四季豆. We didn’t order that this time as we were there for their steamboat.
For the soup base, we ordered herbal soup and it was amazinggggg — truly true to its name of being a herbal soup. Pro tip: throw up some sliced chilli padi for the extra kick!
As for the dishes, we ordered red grouper fish, pork belly, beef, fish ball (girl is obsessed with fishball lol), spinach, enoki mushroom (man’s favourite haha), tanghoon and rice for him. We also got the spicy fried chicken as a side and it was 💯. It was fried to the perfect texture and the meat tasted so tender and flavourful.
When we were done with dinner, it hit me that simple dates like this are equally heartwarming and memorable.
We don't always need cute cafe's or posh restaurants. What matters most is who we are with.
Leave a comment if you agree too, and do give this place a try!

The ambiance at Lao You Ji Fishhead Steamboat Seafood Restaurant, a humble roadside eatery, is cozy and casual, allowing couples to relax and focus on quality time rather than formalities. The herbal soup base is a standout—robust, fragrant, and comforting, which I found perfect for a cool, rainy night. Adding fresh chilli padi adds an exciting spicy kick that awakens your taste buds and complements the delicate flavors of the seafood and meats.
What I loved most was the variety of dishes that allowed us to share and enjoy different textures and tastes—from the tender red grouper and flavorful pork belly to the enoki mushrooms and fresh spinach. The spicy fried chicken side was an unexpected delight, crispy on the outside and juicy inside, adding a perfect contrast.
In my experience, dates do not need to be extravagant at fancy places; sometimes, the simplest meals are the most meaningful. Sharing a warm pot of steamboat encourages conversation and connection as you cook and eat together. It’s an interactive and cozy way to bond.
If you want to try something out of the ordinary for your next date night, consider a traditional steamboat meal. It’s not just about the food, but the shared experience that makes it special. Plus, local hidden gems like Lao You Ji offer authenticity and flavors that chain-chain restaurants can't match. So next time you look for a date idea that's both comfortable and delicious, give steamboat a go—you might just discover a new favorite.
