What were the first signs of dementia?

For those of you who’ve seen your parents (or grandparents) go into dementia or develop Alzheimer’s, what were the first things you noticed, and how did life change for you?

For me, I care for my grandmother, and it’s been 7 years now. The first sign was her suddenly becoming more testy. she just wasn’t the sweet grandma I grew up with. She even started calling me a liar because she couldn’t remember things, and I was so confused at first. Fast forward seven years, and she can’t remember what happened a minute ago…

What were the earliest changes you noticed with your loved one?

... Read moreCaring for someone with dementia can be challenging, especially when early signs start to emerge subtly. One of the earliest indicators of dementia often includes changes in personality, such as increased irritability or uncharacteristic mood swings, which can be confusing for loved ones. Another common early sign is short-term memory loss, where the person might frequently forget recent events or conversations, leading to misunderstandings like calling family members liars unintentionally. Recognizing these signs early allows families to seek professional advice and support services sooner. It’s important for caregivers to educate themselves about dementia progression and to seek emotional support, as caring for someone with dementia can be emotionally taxing over the years. Connecting with others through forums or support groups, as indicated by the use of hashtags like #dementia and #grieve, can provide valuable shared experiences and coping strategies. Moreover, understanding that dementia impacts not only memory but also behavior and communication helps caregivers prepare for evolving needs. Patience and empathy are key, as the loved one may experience frustration and confusion themselves, which can explain sudden changes in behavior such as testiness or distrust. Professional care planning and respite care options can also improve the well-being of both the caregiver and the person with dementia. Overall, early recognition and compassionate care are vital. Sharing experiences in trusted communities encourages others to observe early symptoms and empowers families to navigate this difficult journey with more understanding and support.

interestingly enough, with my mom it was really, really small loads of laundry in the washer(like 3 pairs of underwear small) and items repeated on the shopping list. I am sorry you are going through it, I wouldn't wish it on anyone. It’s horrible to be forgotten by someone that loved and cared for you.
