I remember the first time I really paid attention to Romans 1:17. It's a verse that often gets quoted, but for a long time, I felt like I was just skimming the surface of its meaning. It says, "For in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed—a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: 'The righteous will live by faith.'" Initially, I focused heavily on the phrase "live by faith," thinking it meant just believing in God. But through studying and personal reflection, I started to uncover so much more. The verse begins with a crucial statement: "in the gospel the righteousness of God is revealed." This isn't just about human righteousness or earning our way to God. It's about His perfect, holy, and just nature being made known through the good news of Jesus Christ. For me, realizing that this righteousness isn't something I have to achieve but something God reveals was a huge shift. Then comes the part that ties it all together: "a righteousness that is by faith from first to last." This really hit me. It's not just that faith starts our journey, but it sustains it. It’s a continuous, ongoing reliance on God, every single day. "From first to last" implies a complete and unwavering trust, acknowledging that every step of our spiritual walk is dependent on Him. It’s about letting go of our own attempts to control or earn our standing with God and fully embracing His grace through faith. What does it truly mean to "live by faith" in our everyday lives? For me, it has meant learning to trust God not just with the big things, but with the small, daily anxieties. When I face a challenge or uncertainty, instead of immediately trying to solve it in my own strength, I've learned to pause and remember that the righteous will live by faith. This shifts my perspective from anxiety to peace, knowing that God is sovereign and working things out. It means acting on His word even when it seems counterintuitive or difficult, believing that His ways are higher than mine. This journey of understanding Romans 1:17 has been transformative. It’s a constant reminder that my relationship with God is not based on my performance, but on His perfect righteousness, accessed through an ongoing, active faith. It encourages me to shed self-reliance and embrace a life of humble dependence, trusting that He is with me "from first to last".
