Marathon was the first FPS game I played and it set the stage for a lifetime of gaming. Bungie games were always something special to me, and they continue to mean a lot to me today.

Very few video companies from the 80s and 90s have survived with their “DNA” in-tact, and I do consider Bungie to be one of them.

In this video I talk about my own personal journey with Bungie games, what it was like as a Mac-only gamer, and how I felt about the Microsoft acquisition.

Please let me know in the comments if you have any memories surrounding Marathon, Bungie, or Mac gaming!

3/4 Edited to

... Read moreReflecting on my own experiences with Bungie and the Marathon series, I realize how groundbreaking these games were, especially as a Mac-exclusive player during an era when most FPS games targeted PC users. Marathon wasn't just a game; it was a pioneering storytelling experience that combined rich lore, immersive gameplay, and innovative multiplayer modes. The atmospheric storytelling through terminals and in-game messages created a unique narrative depth that few games of the 90s achieved. One of the most memorable aspects was the feeling of being part of a larger conflict aboard the Marathon colony ship. The embedded messages, warnings, and survival logs pulled me deeper into the world and gave a hauntingly realistic sense of urgency and immersion. Bungie's approach to combining narrative and gameplay truly set them apart. As a Mac gamer, I appreciate how Bungie maintained its dedication to this platform when many others abandoned Mac development during the 80s and 90s. This loyalty allowed a niche but passionate community to flourish. The subsequent Microsoft acquisition marked a significant turning point, but Bungie's core creativity and innovation continue to resonate with fans. These experiences remind me how video games can leave lasting impressions that shape our gaming identity. Whether reminiscing about the adrenaline of first-person combat or the haunting mystery of the Marathon universe, Bungie's DNA has undeniably left its mark on me and countless other gamers worldwide.
