A Forgery of Fate by Elizabeth Lim

Reading date: December 19, 2025

Rating: ⭐️⭐️½–⭐️⭐️⭐️ (2.5–3 stars)

Format: Audiobook

I went into A Forgery of Fate knowing it centers heavily on family, and that is definitely the heart of this story. From the beginning, the book emphasizes deep family bonds especially the love between the sisters and their parents. Tru Saigas, the eldest sister, is strong-willed and stubborn, carrying the weight of responsibility after their father is lost at sea. Her sisters, Fal (who dreams of a more luxurious life) and Nomi (a quiet book lover who just wants to help), felt clearly defined and easy to understand.

Spoilers below

Up to around chapter 12, the story strongly focuses on “family above everything,” and while I respect that theme, it didn’t always work for me personally. I struggled most with the mother’s actions after the father’s death. Her descent into gambling, selling off their home and belongings felt frustrating rather than sympathetic to me. I understand grief affects people differently, but watching the children suffer because of those choices was difficult, especially when Tru directs her anger at everyone except the person responsible. This is very much a personal reaction rather than a statement about the writing itself.

I had also heard this story described as a Beauty and the Beast–style retelling, but that comparison didn’t fully land for me. When Tru meets the dragon, I didn’t find him particularly cruel, if anything, he felt restrained and even protective. Tru’s hostility toward him felt stronger than the situation called for, which made it hard for me to connect with her early on. Interestingly, once she softens around chapter 18, I enjoyed the story more.

However, by chapter 25, I realized I wasn’t feeling invested anymore and chose to DNF. Not because I hated the book but because I think I’m no longer in a stage of life where stories centered on self-sacrifice at all costs for family resonate with me. Where the adults aren’t protecting their children or at least helping them.

That said, readers who love family-driven narratives, emotional responsibility, and slow character growth may really connect with this book even if it just wasn’t for me.

... Read moreWhile my fellow reader might have had a challenging journey with 'A Forgery of Fate' by Elizabeth Lim, I feel it's worth exploring what makes this book so compelling for many others. From what I’ve gathered and seen, this story truly shines for those who adore intricate family sagas woven into a richly imagined fantasy world. The idea of deep familial loyalty, especially between sisters, is something I personally find incredibly heartwarming, even when it leads to difficult situations, as our original reviewer experienced with the mother’s choices. I think this complexity is often where the real magic of a story lies – in showing how love and responsibility can be both a burden and a blessing. Many, like me, are drawn to the captivating cover art – that striking image of a woman with white hair and the magnificent golden dragon against a dark blue backdrop really sets the stage for an epic tale. And speaking of dragons, the 'Beauty and the Beast' comparison that often comes up is fascinating. While it might not be a direct retelling, the element of a powerful, somewhat mysterious creature and a human protagonist navigating an unusual bond definitely echoes that classic vibe. I imagine the dragon in this story isn't just a beast, but a complex character with his own motivations and perhaps a protective nature, as hinted at in the initial review. This kind of nuanced relationship building is often what I look for in fantasy, where the lines between good and bad are beautifully blurred. If you're someone who appreciates a story where characters undergo significant emotional growth and face tough ethical dilemmas, then 'A Forgery of Fate' might just be your next favorite read. It seems to delve deep into themes of responsibility, grief, and the lengths we go to for those we love. Even if the journey of the protagonist, Tru, is sometimes frustrating, it’s often through these challenging character arcs that we find the most rewarding insights. I always find myself drawn to narratives where the adults aren't perfect – because, let's be real, who is? – and their flaws create real consequences that the younger characters must grapple with. It adds a layer of gritty realism to the fantasy, making the stakes feel incredibly personal. This book sounds perfect for readers who enjoy slow-burn character development and stories that prioritize emotional stakes over fast-paced action. If you're a fan of myth-inspired fantasy with a strong emphasis on cultural elements, especially those with an Asian-inspired setting, and character-driven plots, Elizabeth Lim's writing often delivers on that front. I've found her previous works to be incredibly immersive, building worlds that feel both ancient and alive. If you cherish tales of strong sister bonds, reluctant heroes, and a touch of magical realism, then this could be a truly enriching experience for you. So, while it didn't quite capture everyone, I'd suggest giving 'A Forgery of Fate' a try if these themes and a journey of profound self-discovery resonate with you. You might just find yourself completely immersed in Tru's world and her fight to protect her family, even if the path is fraught with tough decisions and unexpected turns.
