Orisha — Story and Art by Huzayfa Umar

Give me Book 2 right the hell now! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was absolutely beautiful. The story follows Aboki, a boy who unfortunately bears the markings of a monster. His life changes when he stumbles across an Orisha seed that grants him incredible powers.

One of my favorite things about Aboki is that he feels like a normal kid who’s just trying to live his life. He’s basically standing there like, “I didn’t ask for any of this, but nobody likes me anyway, so I guess I’m a hero now.” It made him really easy to root for.

He also meets E’shu, and honestly? My reaction the entire time was, “My guy, relax. He’s literally doing his best, okay?”

I was completely invested in seeing where Aboki’s journey would lead him. Meeting the Orisha is both awe-inspiring and terrifying. Their powers are intimidating, but their designs are absolutely stunning.

And that plot twist? It nearly took me out.

Where the hell is Book 2?! #blackmanga #blackbookrecommendations #blackbook

5/30 Edited to

... Read moreReading "Orisha" feels like stepping into a rich world where traditional mythology blends with modern storytelling. The protagonist, Aboki, is especially relatable because he starts out just wanting a normal life despite the curse-like markings on his face. This element grounds the story in real human emotion, which makes his encounters with supernatural powers feel even more impactful. What really stood out for me is how the Orisha themselves are portrayed—not just as powerful entities but as mysterious beings with awe-inspiring appearances that are both beautiful and intimidating. It reminds me of the powerful symbolism often found in African spirituality and folklore, which the story seems to weave seamlessly into its narrative. The dynamic between Aboki and the figure E'shu adds a layer of complexity, revealing how even those with great power struggle to do their best. It’s a refreshing take on heroism that isn’t about perfection but perseverance despite doubts and fears. Also, the story’s visual style complements the narrative perfectly. The artistic depiction of characters, especially the unique markings and mystical elements, enhances the immersive experience. It’s clear the author and artist put tremendous effort into crafting a visually stunning and thematically rich book. If you’re interested in manga that highlights diverse stories and characters from underrepresented cultures, "Orisha" is a must-read. It broadens the genre and provides a fresh perspective that resonates well beyond simple good-versus-evil tropes. For those eager to dive deeper, the cliffhanger ending and plot twist leave you wanting more, making the anticipation for Book 2 almost unbearable. This story not only entertains but encourages reflection on identity, acceptance, and the meaning of true power. In summary, "Orisha" is more than just a fantasy story. It’s a beautifully crafted exploration of self-acceptance and courage wrapped in a spellbinding blend of mythology and modern art. Keep an eye out for the next installment because Aboki’s journey is just beginning!
