Keeping Traditions Alive

Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a rich and vibrant Mexican tradition celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. This holiday blends indigenous customs with Spanish influences, allowing families to honor and remember their deceased loved ones. Altars, known as ofrendas, are constructed at home and gravesites, adorned with photographs, favorite foods, and items that the deceased enjoyed in life. Central to the celebration are marigolds, which are believed to guide the spirits to their altars. The vibrant orange and yellow flowers symbolize the fragility of life. Food plays a crucial role; traditional dishes, such as pan de muerto, a sweet bread, and sugar skulls, are often prepared and gifted to those who have passed. In addition, various communities host parades and festivals to celebrate, fostering a collective remembrance and honoring the bond between the living and the dead.
