Goblin Valley State Park, Utah

Sometimes state parks are just as awesome as national parks!

We didn’t have Goblin Valley on our road trip plan, but we are so glad we decided to stop at the last minute!

Goblin Valley State Park in Utah is such a treasure, especially if you have kids! The most popular part is called The Valley of Goblins. It is a free roam area where you can explore and scramble around the hoodoos, which totally look like goblins! We had fun finding the faces in the rock structures.

This is another place we’d love to go back and visit again!

Do you have a favorite state park? Tell us in the comments!⬇️

Goblin Valley State Park
2025/1/12 Edited to

... Read moreI still can't believe we almost drove past Goblin Valley State Park! What started as a last-minute detour on our road trip quickly became one of the most memorable parts of our entire journey. If you're wondering if a state park can truly rival a national park experience, let me tell you, Goblin Valley proves it unequivocally. This place, with its unique "goblin" rock formations, is not just impressive; it’s an absolute wonderland, especially if you’re traveling with little adventurers. The heart of the park is the aptly named Valley of Goblins. Unlike many parks with designated trails you must stick to, Goblin Valley offers a rare and exhilarating "free roam" experience. Imagine stepping into a vast playground filled with thousands of mushroom-shaped hoodoos, or "goblins," as they're affectionately called. You're encouraged to wander, climb, and explore to your heart's content! My family spent hours scrambling over rocks, ducking into crevices, and playing hide-and-seek among these geological marvels. It’s truly a hands-on adventure that sparks imagination, making it uniquely suited for children who love to explore and discover. We had such a blast finding all sorts of faces and shapes carved by nature into the rocks – some looked grumpy, some surprised, and others just plain silly! For those interested in "Goblin Valley State Park trails," while there aren't traditional marked hiking trails crisscrossing the entire valley floor, the beauty lies in creating your own path. You can spend hours just meandering through the formations, effectively making your own "trail" as you go. This freedom is what makes it so special. However, there are a few designated paths leading down into the valley from the overlooks, which are easy to navigate. If you're looking for a bit more structure, some short, marked trails like the Curtis Bench Trail offer panoramic views of the goblins from above. To make the most of your visit, especially during the warmer months, plan to go in the early morning or late afternoon. The light is fantastic for photos, and the temperatures are much more comfortable for exploring. Definitely bring plenty of water – there’s little shade in the Valley of Goblins – and wear sturdy closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven terrain and light climbing. Sunscreen, hats, and snacks are also essentials for keeping spirits high. This place truly earns the "green goblin impressive" label. The sheer scale and bizarre beauty of the landscape feel otherworldly. It’s like being transported to Mars, but with friendlier, more playful inhabitants. The sense of entering a magical realm, almost like passing through a "goblins gate" into a hidden world, is palpable as you descend into the valley. Beyond the main goblin area, the park also offers camping facilities and picnic areas, making it a great spot for a longer stay or a leisurely lunch. If you're in the area, or even if you need to go a bit out of your way, Goblin Valley State Park is a definite must-see. It's a testament to the idea that some of the most extraordinary adventures are found in the most unexpected places, proving that state parks can indeed offer just as much, if not more, wonder than their national counterparts. You won't regret adding this unique gem to your travel itinerary!

Would you do it?? 👇 This frolf course at Goblin Valley was HARD (like we had to fetch frisbees down canyons and half the time we couldn’t see the basket/hole) but soooo cool. Zero shade, lots of walking, really insane holes, changing landscape, and even jasper all over the ground at the end!
