The 5G satellite net on the iPhone gives up the prop? And what will change our communication forever?
Remember, when the iPhone 14 was released in 2022, one of the most buzzing features was sending text messages for help via satellite, but that was only an emergency measure to use because you couldn't use it to play social or surf the Internet.
But most recently, an interesting rumor has emerged that the restrictions are disappearing and that the iPhone may soon be able to connect to 5G via satellite.
The beginning of this story comes from a source on Weibo called Fixed Focus Digital, a disinfectant with a fairly accurate history. He has come forward to reveal that Apple's new modem chip, or C2 modem, expected to come with the A20 chip in the iPhone 18 Pro, will support a technology called NR-NTN.
Simply explained, NR-NTN is a non-terrestrial-dependent interconnection technology that allows a smartphone to connect directly to the Internet through low-orbit satellites. That means you can access 5G Internet from virtually anywhere on Earth, no matter how far away you are from the phone towers.
In Thailand, this is a very important turning point. Imagine when you go for a deep hike in Chiang Mai or sail in the middle of the Andaman Sea at a point of inaccessibility. Your phone is usually just an expensive paperweight, but if this technology comes true, you will still be able to send text messages, communicate, or even check information like you are in a city.
However, this information must be listened to. Although major media outlets like The Information and Bloomberg have reported in the same direction that Apple is ambushing this, the major challenge is not just the machine itself, but the satellite infrastructure to support it. Currently, mobile giant Huawei is also speeding up testing in China.
Analysts predict that 2026 will be the golden year in which many smartphone manufacturers begin to launch a full-fledged satellite Internet feature, which, if Apple succeeds first, will take it a step further from the time satellites were meant to save lives to become real-life satellites.
Finally, what we need to keep an eye on is the cost of service, because of course, satellite transmission costs much higher than normal towers, and whether the speed is stable enough for practical use.
This is not only a matter of stronger mobile specs, but of breaking down the wall of impotence that has long bothered the Thai people, and marks the beginning of a modern era of communication that no longer needs to reconcile.
ถ้าใครเคยเจอ “เสาสัญญาณ AIS” ขึ้นน้อยหรือหายไปดื้อๆ จะเข้าใจเลยว่าชีวิตติดเน็ตแค่ไหนก็แพ้ “จุดอับสัญญาณ” โดยเฉพาะตอนอยู่ในอาคารลึกๆ ลิฟต์ ที่จอดรถใต้ดิน หรือออกทริปต่างจังหวัดแบบเข้าป่า/ขึ้นเขา พอสัญญาณไม่มา ต่อให้ใช้ iPhone รุ่นใหม่แค่ไหนก็ทำอะไรไม่ได้มาก นี่แหละที่ทำให้ข่าวเรื่อง iPhone อาจไปถึง 5G ผ่านดาวเทียมในอนาคต (NR-NTN) ดูน่าตื่นเต้น เพราะมันเหมือนเป็นทางเลือกเมื่อ “ง้อเสาสัญญาณ” ไม่ไหวจริงๆ แต่ก่อนจะฝากความหวังไว้กับดาวเทียม ลองไล่เช็กสาเหตุและวิธีแก้เบื้องต้นของปัญหา “เสาสัญญาณ AIS” ที่คนเจอบ่อยๆ ก่อน (หลายครั้งแก้ได้ทันที) 1) เช็กว่าพื้นที่นั้นเป็นจุดอับจริงไหม บางจุดสัญญาณหายเพราะโครงสร้างบัง เช่น ผนังคอนกรีตหนา กระจกเคลือบฟิล์ม อาคารสูง หรืออยู่ห่างจากหน้าต่างมากๆ วิธีง่ายสุดคือเดินไปใกล้หน้าต่าง/ออกนอกอาคาร แล้วดูว่าแถบสัญญาณกลับมาหรือไม่ ถ้ากลับมา แปลว่า “เสาสัญญาณ AIS ไม่ได้หาย” แต่สัญญาณทะลุเข้ามาไม่ถึง 2) สลับโหมดเครื่องเร็วๆ เวลาสัญญาณรวน ฉันมักลองเปิด-ปิดโหมดเครื่องบิน 10–15 วินาที หรือรีสตาร์ตเครื่องหนึ่งรอบ วิธีนี้ช่วยรีเฟรชการจับเครือข่ายได้บ่อยกว่าที่คิด 3) เช็กการตั้งค่าเครือข่ายบน iPhone ไปที่ ตั้งค่า > เซลลูลาร์ > ตัวเลือกข้อมูลเซลลูลาร์ แล้วดูว่าเปิด 5G/4G ตามแพ็กเกจ และเปิด VoLTE (ถ้ามี) บางพื้นที่ 5G อาจยังไม่เสถียร ลองสลับเป็น 4G ชั่วคราวแล้วเทียบดูว่าอันไหนนิ่งกว่า 4) ตรวจสอบซิม/ eSIM และอัปเดต iOS ซิมเก่ามากๆ หรือโปรไฟล์ eSIM มีปัญหาอาจทำให้การเกาะสัญญาณไม่นิ่ง ลองถอดใส่ซิมใหม่ (ถ้าเป็นซิม) หรือให้ AIS ช่วยตรวจโปรไฟล์ eSIM และอย่าลืมอัปเดต iOS/Carrier Settings เพราะมีผลกับการทำงานของโมเด็ม 5) แยกให้ออกว่าเป็นปัญหา “สัญญาณ” หรือ “เน็ต” บางทีเสาสัญญาณขึ้นเต็ม แต่เน็ตอืดเพราะความหนาแน่นผู้ใช้ (ช่วงคอนเสิร์ต/งานอีเวนต์) แบบนี้ต่อให้เปลี่ยนมือถือก็ไม่ต่างมาก ลองทดสอบด้วยการโทรออก/รับสาย ถ้าโทรยังชัดแต่เน็ตช้า มักเป็นเรื่องแบนด์วิดท์มากกว่า แล้วดาวเทียมจะช่วยได้ยังไง? สิ่งที่ iPhone ทำได้ในปัจจุบัน (Emergency SOS via Satellite) ยังเน้น “ฉุกเฉิน” เป็นหลัก ข้อความจะส่งช้ากว่า และต้องออกไปในที่โล่งเพื่อให้จับสัญญาณดาวเทียมได้ แต่ถ้าอนาคตไปถึงระดับ “5G ผ่านดาวเทียม” จริง มันจะกลายเป็นเหมือนเน็ตสำรองเวลาเสาสัญญาณ AIS เข้าไม่ถึง โดยเฉพาะสายเที่ยว เดินป่า ขับรถทางไกล หรือทำงานภาคสนาม อย่างที่อยากให้เผื่อใจไว้คือ เรื่องราคาและการใช้งานจริง: เน็ตผ่านดาวเทียมต้นทุนสูงกว่า ความเร็ว/ความหน่วง (latency) อาจไม่เหมาะกับทุกอย่างในช่วงแรกๆ ฉันมองว่าช่วงเริ่มต้นน่าจะเหมาะกับการ “ติดต่อสื่อสารสำคัญ ส่งข้อความ ส่งพิกัด เช็กข้อมูลจำเป็น” มากกว่าการสตรีมหนักๆ สรุปคือ ระหว่างที่เรายังต้องพึ่ง “เสาสัญญาณ AIS” เป็นหลัก การแก้ปัญหาแบบบ้านๆ ข้างบนช่วยได้เยอะมาก และถ้าวันหนึ่ง iPhone รองรับ 5G ผ่านดาวเทียมจริง มันจะเป็นตัวช่วยปิดช่องโหว่ของจุดอับสัญญาณได้ดี—แต่คงไม่ได้มาแทนเครือข่ายภาคพื้นดินแบบ 100% ทันที
