iPhone 18 rumor to replace new chips, get more privacy, the network will no longer know our exact location.
There's an update on the iPhone 18 today. A recent rumor says that Apple plans to expand the use of its own modems to cover all iPhone 18 models and prepare to phase out Qualcomm modems. This transition not only helps with speed and energy savings, but also has privacy benefits that we may not know very well.
In iOS 26.3, Apple added a setting called Limit Precise Location. This feature will reduce the amount of data on our location that mobile networks can access. The network will usually estimate our location from the towers that the mobile phone is connected to, which may know at the street or front of the house. But if this setting is opened, the data sent will be limited to the network's location at the neighborhood level.
But the limitation is that this feature only works on machines with Apple's C1 or C1X modems (iPhone Air, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, and iPad Pro M5). Devices using other modems like the current iPhone 17 Pro do not have this feature.
When the news came that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Fold would switch to Apple's modem technology, it was predicted that this privacy feature would be extended to the entire iPhone line-up. No need to worry about it.
Because it does not affect the quality of our signals or our use, and if we make an emergency call, accurate location information will still be sent to the authorities. It is clearly separated from sharing the location to the apps.
Of course, even if the device is supported, the network operator has to update the system. There may not be many supported networks now, but if new iPhone models use this feature, it should be more widely used. The good news is that some Thai networks already support this feature. The C2 modem that Apple is rumored to be ambushing is said to be much better than the previous generation. The performance should be comparable to the newest modem of its competitors and is expected to support 5G mmWave technology. Wait and see.
