It’s summer. It’s hot. And my two kids are a LOT to keep entertained. So, today we went on an adventure to Hobby Lobby. They each got to pick out the hat and patches they wanted. Each hat expresses their personalities to a T! Of course momma had to make one, too.
This was a quick 30 minute project. It took us more time picking the patches out and choosing the layout than it did to actually iron them on. The hats are SUPER CHEAP at Hobby Lobby and the patches range from $1-$5.

This is where you can really let personalities shine. My kids, Sawyer and Evelyn, spent ages picking theirs out. We found everything from fun 'smiley face' and 'rainbow' patches to more specific ones like a 'paw print' for our animal lover, a 'cupcake' for someone with a sweet tooth, or even a cool 'lightning bolt' or 'mountain scene' for an adventurous spirit. Evelyn loved her 'SMART STRONG & BEAUTIFUL' patch, and Sawyer picked a cool 'S BRUH!' one along with a pizza slice. I even saw some with cute 'daisy' designs and little 'crown' patches. My own hat featured a 'You matter' patch, which was a lovely reminder. Don't forget those initial letters like the 'T' and 'W' we used for personalized touches! Once you have your patches, lay them out on the hat before ironing. This is crucial! Play around with the arrangement until you love it. Take a picture with your phone so you remember the exact layout. This prevents any 'oops' moments. When you're ready to iron, make sure your iron is on a medium-high setting, no steam. Place a thin cloth (a tea towel or pillowcase works great) over the patch to protect it and the hat fabric. Press firmly for about 15-30 seconds, then check if the edges are sealed. I've seen amazing patches on Etsy, Amazon, and even local craft fairs. You can find super unique designs there too. To keep your custom trucker hat looking great, try to spot-clean it rather than throwing it in the washing machine. If it does need a deeper clean, hand wash gently in cool water with mild soap and let it air dry. Excessive washing can sometimes loosen the adhesive on the patches. Thinking beyond just iron-ons, there are so many ways to personalize these hats! You could try fabric paint for custom designs, or even embroidery if you're feeling ambitious.
