Anybody else’s cat do this? 🤣
So, your cat's a water bowl vandal too? You're definitely not alone! It seems like cats worldwide have a secret club dedicated to knocking water bowls over and finding the most unconventional ways to hydrate. My own 'weird cat' has perfected the art of creating a mini-flood, then delicately licking the water from his paw as if it's the most sophisticated way to drink. It's both frustrating and hilariously endearing, making me wonder if he truly does have an 'extra chromosome' when it comes to common sense. But why do our feline friends engage in this peculiar behavior? From what I've gathered from other cat parents and some light research, there are a few reasons. Sometimes, it's simply play – they love splashing and seeing the water move. Others suggest cats might prefer drinking from moving water, which explains why some love a leaky faucet or a water fountain. The flat surface after knocking the water bowl over might also be more appealing to them than the confined space of a bowl, especially if their whiskers touch the sides, which can be irritating. And then there's the possibility that they just want fresher water, believing the water they've just spilled is somehow superior to what was in the bowl. Dealing with a cat who constantly insists on knocking water bowls over can be a challenge, especially when you come home to a wet floor! I've tried a few things that might help. First, a heavier ceramic or stainless steel bowl can deter them from tipping it. Placing the bowl on a non-slip mat or even in a shallow tray can contain the mess. Some cat owners swear by elevated bowls, while others find that a pet water fountain satisfies their cat's craving for moving water, reducing the urge to spill. For my own quirky furball, I've found that a wide, shallow ceramic bowl placed on a silicone mat works best. He still occasionally bats at it, but the full-scale water park incidents have reduced. Ultimately, it's just one of those charming, albeit messy, quirks that come with living with a cat. Their individual personalities and amusing antics are what make them such wonderful companions. So, if your cat is also a connoisseur of spilled water, taking great pleasure in licking the water from his paw, just know you're in good company. Embrace the weirdness, share your stories, and maybe invest in some extra absorbent towels!
