Review for Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver
GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!! What a delightfully strange, darkly humorous, disturbingly entertaining, deeply emotional, and deliciously sweet and spicy romantic comedy about a duo of vigilante serial killers who target other malevolent serial killers!
Certainly, please note that the content includes a substantial amount of gruesome and gory elements, given the nature of the characters as serial killers.
However, it's balanced by witty humor, providing moments of levity amidst the darkness.
Tropes/ Themes:
Dark Romance
Serial Killer Romance
Gruesome meet-cute
Friends to Lovers (over the course of 4 years)
Forced Proximity
He falls first
Touch her/him you die (literally)
Rowan was such a cinnamon roll mmc and I know that is hard to believe considering he is a serial killer.
His unwavering devotion and protectiveness of Sloan was truly remarkable. From the very beginning, he exudes a clear sense of purpose, knowing precisely what he wants and demonstrating an unyielding resolve to pursue it relentlessly. As for Sloane, she embodied the epitome of an amazingly strong fmc and has a kind heart. The banter and chemistry between them was electrifying!! I loved how the attraction was immediate between them but it was a slow burn from friends to lovers with a payoff that is so worth waitina for!
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this unhinged, hilarious, and delightful rom-com!! Now I just need book two in the series!! I do highly recommend BUT please check the trigger warning first due to it being a dark romance.🩷🥲

Okay, fellow dark romance enthusiasts, let's really unpack what makes Brynne Weaver's 'Butcher & Blackbird' such an unforgettable read, especially when it comes to the enigmatic Rowan Kane. Like many of you, I found myself searching for more about this unique character, and honestly, the book delivers beyond expectation! When I first heard 'serial killer romance,' I'll admit I was intrigued but also a little wary. However, Rowan Kane completely flips the script. The original review touched on him being a 'cinnamon roll mmc,' and it's true! How can a man who dispatches other serial killers with such efficiency also be so utterly devoted and protective? That's the magic. His loyalty to Sloane isn't just a plot device; it's the beating heart of their relationship. He knows what he wants – Sloane – and he pursues it with the same unwavering resolve he applies to his 'work.' For me, this made him incredibly compelling. He’s not just a killer; he's her killer, and that possessiveness, oddly enough, feels incredibly romantic within the context of this dark world. The 4-year friends-to-lovers arc was another highlight that truly cemented my love for this book. It wasn't an instant, fiery passion (though the attraction was undeniable from their gruesome meet-cute!). Instead, it was a slow, delicious burn, built on shared secrets, mutual understanding, and a unique moral compass that only they seem to share. Watching their bond deepen, through witty banter and increasingly dangerous situations, was pure payoff. You genuinely root for them to find their version of happiness amidst the chaos. The chemistry between Rowan and Sloane practically leaps off the page; every interaction, every glance, every shared moment of dark humor just sizzles. And speaking of dark humor, that's what truly balances the gruesome elements. Yes, there are explicit descriptions of violence – it’s a book about serial killers, after all – but it’s never gratuitous to the point of being unbearable. The clever dialogue and the characters' unique perspectives provide unexpected moments of levity, allowing you to breathe and even laugh. It makes the darkness digestible and highlights the characters' resilience and their twisted sense of justice. It's a fine line to walk, and Brynne Weaver absolutely nails it. For those who've been hesitant about diving into serial killer romance or dark romance in general, 'Butcher & Blackbird' is a fantastic entry point, provided you check those trigger warnings (seriously, do it!). It pushes boundaries, sure, but it does so with heart and an incredibly well-developed central relationship. My personal reading experience was a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars for its sheer audacity and execution. It’s definitely a book that sparks discussion, and while some might find it too intense, for me, it was a delightfully unhinged ride that left me desperate for book two. If you're looking for a romance that's sweet, spicy, and utterly unique, with a hero like Rowan Kane who will protect his love at all costs, then this is definitely one to add to your TBR!
