Less toxic alternatives in my household🫧
I would like to preface by saying I got some of these ideas from a nontoxic group on facebook and I have not done a lot of research myself-hence why I said LESS toxic as I do not know if these are completely non toxic..
1)Switched from cascade to molly’s this week
2)Made my own all purpose spray with essential oil for scent, vinegar, water, and dish soap I believe
3)Homemade bug spray vs OFF- essential oils and water only
4)Ants have appeared in my pantry: used 5-6 drops on a cotton pad and placed on multiple shelves in my pantry. *this is out of reach from my cats!!* Woke up this morning to NO ants.
5)Dish soap I saw recommended by the nontoxic fb group. Switching to that after my previous one runs out
6)Made my own laundry detergent, made this whole container last summer and still have plenty more!
Incorporating less toxic alternatives into your household routine can greatly reduce exposure to harsh chemicals, benefiting both your health and the environment. One useful approach I’ve found effective is switching to plant-powered products like Molly’s Suds dishwasher pods. These pods use safer ingredients compared to conventional brands like Cascade and are gentle on skin and the planet. Making your own all-purpose cleaner with simple ingredients such as white vinegar, water, a few drops of essential oils like lemon or lavender, and a small amount of dish soap can be a game changer. This not only cuts down on toxic chemicals but saves money too. Essential oils provide natural antibacterial properties and a pleasant scent without synthetic fragrances. For pest control, DIY bug sprays made from essential oils and water work surprisingly well and avoid the harmful chemicals found in commercial insect repellents like OFF. For instance, peppermint oil is well-known for its ability to deter ants and other insects. Placing cotton pads with essential oil drops in pantry shelves helps keep ants away while ensuring the solution stays out of reach of pets. Switching to a hypoallergenic and plant-based dish soap such as the recommended ECOS product can reduce the chance of skin irritation, especially for sensitive skin or allergy sufferers. Similarly, homemade laundry detergent using natural ingredients can last for months and reduce the exposure to artificial additives often present in store-bought detergents. By gradually replacing conventional household products with these less toxic alternatives, I’ve noticed a fresher, cleaner home environment and a sense of satisfaction knowing I’m making safer choices. Always remember to test DIY mixtures carefully for your household’s unique needs and keep all essential oils away from pets to ensure their safety. This approach to nontoxic living is accessible, budget-friendly, and an excellent way to promote a healthier lifestyle for your family.
