Holding Space for Designers to ACTUALLY take PTO

Rest isn’t lazy. it’s literally how your brain does its best work!

Took a full week off and didn’t touch my portfolio once. No guilt, no hustle. Just… living. Went to the symphony, made decorations, performed emergency cactus surgery (yes really), and spent quality time with my cat and fam.

Neuroscience backs this up. Your brain’s default mode network—the part responsible for creative problem-solving and connecting ideas—only activates when you STOP trying. All those “aha moments” in the shower? That’s your DMN doing what it does best.

So if you’re a designer feeling guilty about taking real time off: this is your permission slip. Rest is part of the creative process, not a break from it.

... Read moreTaking a full week off and disconnecting completely from work tasks might feel luxurious or even indulgent, but for designers, it's a crucial ingredient for creative vitality. Neuroscience reveals that the brain's default mode network (DMN) activates during periods of rest, allowing for creative problem-solving and idea synthesis. This network is responsible for those spontaneous "aha moments" that often come when your mind is relaxed, such as during a shower or while taking a leisurely walk. For designers, who constantly engage in intensive cognitive tasks, allowing the brain to enter this default mode is essential. Continuous hustle without breaks may lead to burnout and diminished creativity, ultimately hurting work quality and personal well-being. Whether it’s stepping away to enjoy cultural experiences like the symphony, indulging in hobbies such as crafting holiday decorations, or performing quirky tasks like "cactus surgery," each of these activities contributes to mental refreshment. Importantly, rest is not an interruption of the creative process but a vital part of it. Embracing PTO without guilt enables better focus, sharper problem-solving skills, and innovative thinking upon return. Furthermore, spending quality time with family or pets nurtures emotional balance, which supports overall mental health. Creating intentional space for rest in the design workflow is beneficial not only for individuals but also for teams and organizations. Cultivating a culture that values genuine time off encourages sustained productivity and creativity. Designers can advocate for policies that limit work intrusions during PTO and promote a balanced approach to work-life integration. In conclusion, rest should be recognized as a strategic tool for enhancing creativity and effectiveness in design work. So, designers, give yourself the permission to take real breaks, knowing that your brain—and your craft—will benefit greatly.
