Collected some shells before we left
Had a nice weekend with wifey ❤️
I just came back from the most wonderful weekend getaway with my amazing wifey, and guess what we spent a good chunk of our time doing? Collecting seashells! There’s something so incredibly therapeutic about strolling along the shore, eyes peeled for those tiny treasures the ocean leaves behind. It’s not just a hobby; it’s an adventure, a treasure hunt, and a fantastic way to connect with nature. Our trip to Barrier Island was particularly fruitful, and I wanted to share some of my personal tips and what I love to do with all those beautiful finds! If you're new to seashell collecting, timing is everything! The best time to go is usually an hour or two after low tide, especially after a storm, as the receding waters and churned-up waves tend to deposit a fresh bounty of shells. Early mornings are also fantastic, not just for the serene quiet but also because you beat the crowds. On Barrier Island, I’ve found that the calmer, less-frequented stretches of beach often yield the most unique specimens. Look along the high tide line, in shallow pools, and sometimes even buried just beneath the wet sand. The variety of shells you can find is just incredible. We collected everything from delicate sand dollars to sturdy conches, jingle shells, scallops, and even a few olive shells in various shapes and colours. Each one tells a story! Just a friendly reminder: always check for living creatures inside before you pick up a shell. It's crucial to respect marine life and only collect uninhabited shells. Also, be mindful of any local regulations regarding shell collecting – some areas have limits or restrictions. Once you’ve got your haul, the next step is cleaning them up! I usually soak my shells in a bucket of water with a tiny splash of bleach for a few hours, then scrub them gently with an old toothbrush to remove any stubborn grime or organic matter. After a good rinse and air dry in the sun, they're ready for their next life. Now, for the fun part: what to do with your collected treasures! I love turning my finds into decorative articles. Here are a few of my favorite creative ideas: Memory Jars: A simple yet beautiful way to display your collection. Layer different shells and sand from your trip in a clear glass jar. It makes for a lovely keepsake and a conversation starter. Shell Art & Frames: Hot glue guns are your best friend here! You can adorn photo frames, mirrors, or even create intricate shell mosaics on a canvas. Imagine a beautiful shell-encrusted frame showcasing a favorite beach photo! DIY Candles: Melt wax into small glass containers and arrange smaller shells around the rim or embed them slightly into the wax. These make fantastic gifts or centerpieces. Jewelry Dishes: Larger, flatter shells like scallops can be beautiful as small dishes for rings, earrings, or other tiny trinkets. Wall Decor: Create a stunning mobile by drilling small holes in shells (carefully!) and stringing them together with beads and driftwood. Or arrange a collection of particularly striking shells in a shadow box for a minimalist art piece. Sharing your beautiful finds and creations on social media is also a big part of the fun! Snap some photos of your "shell collector" journey, your raw haul, and your finished decorative articles. It's a great way to inspire others and connect with fellow beachcombers online. So, next time you're near a coast, consider spending some time searching for these natural wonders. It’s a wonderful way to bring a piece of the ocean's magic home with you, and you might just discover a new passion!
