Being a support worker is not about you

Wanting to “change someone’s life” can be more about ego than support, depending on what kind of person and support worker you are.

Disability support is not about being impressive, inspirational, or needed.

It’s about listening, adapting, and respecting the person’s choices, even when they don’t match your expectations or ways of doing things.

Ethical support centres the person, not the worker.

... Read moreHaving worked in disability support for several years, I've come to understand that being a support worker is fundamentally about humility and empathy. The phrase from the image, "HOW NOT TO BE A SHIT C*NT SUPPORTWORKER," bluntly highlights the need to avoid arrogance or ego-driven motives. In my experience, some new support workers enter the field motivated by a desire to "change someone’s life" in ways they find impressive or inspiring. However, real support is much more subtle and respectful. True support means listening carefully to what the person with a disability wants and needs, even when their choices seem unusual or challenging. It requires flexibility and patience to adapt your approach instead of imposing your own expectations. For instance, I once supported a client who preferred a very different daily routine than what I initially expected. By respecting their choices, our working relationship became much more positive and empowering for them. Ethical support always centers on the person's autonomy—it's not about the support worker seeking acknowledgment or feeling accomplished. This mindset fosters trust and allows clients to feel truly supported and valued. Support workers should continuously reflect on their motivations and remember that their role is to serve and respect the person’s dignity and preferences. If you are a support worker or considering this career, focus on building empathy skills, actively listening, and avoiding any temptation to let ego overshadow the person's needs. This approach not only improves the quality of support but also creates more meaningful and respectful connections with those you assist.
