What’s a 401K?

... Read moreA 401(k) plan is a popular retirement savings vehicle in the United States that allows employees to save a portion of their paycheck before taxes are taken out. Typically offered by employers, these plans often include matching contributions, which can significantly boost your savings over time. It is important to understand the two main types of 401(k) plans: traditional and Roth. In a traditional 401(k), contributions are made pre-tax, reducing your taxable income for the year, while taxes are paid upon withdrawal during retirement. Conversely, Roth 401(k) contributions are made after-tax, allowing for tax-free withdrawals in retirement. Knowing when to utilize each type can depend on your current tax situation and expected tax rates in retirement. Additionally, understanding the contribution limits set by the IRS is essential. For 2023, employees can contribute up to $22,500 annually, with a catch-up contribution of $7,500 for those aged 50 and above. Maximizing these contributions can significantly help you build a robust retirement nest egg. Don't forget to consider the investment options within your 401(k) plan, which typically include mutual funds, stocks, and bonds. Proper asset allocation within these options is vital to achieving your long-term financial goals. Lastly, it’s wise to periodically review your 401(k) strategy, especially during major life changes, to ensure your retirement plans remain on track.

Love this! I say live your life. My dad retired and passed away 2 years later. Didn’t even really get to enjoy his retirement. Do I save for a rainy day? Yes. Do I also live my life and spoil myself even when I probably shouldn’t? Also yes! Our time here isn’t guaranteed and I’m going to enjoy the time I have ❤️
