Summer is here, and while the sun means fun, it also brings the challenge of keeping little ones entertained, especially when the temperatures soar! As a mom trying to juggle playtime for different age groups, I've learned a few tricks, especially for those busy 2-3 year olds and for creating easy, engaging DIY games. Finding activities for toddlers (ages 2-3) that are both stimulating and safe can feel like a quest. My go-to is always water play. A simple pink kiddie pool with toy fish and fishing rods turns into a 'Tropical Fishing' adventure, perfect for developing motor skills and imagination. Even just a shallow basin with some cups, sponges, and plastic animals provides endless fun. Another favorite is a sensory 'Dig for your treasure from under the sea!' setup. You can use a small inflatable pool filled with sand and yellow toy shovels and hide some waterproof toys for them to discover. It keeps them engaged and cool! For something drier, a large sheet of paper or an old cardboard box laid outside with some chunky crayons or washable paint can unleash their inner artist. And don't forget bubbles! Simple, cheap, and always a hit with the youngest crowd. For slightly older kids, or even for toddlers with some supervision, DIY tossing games are fantastic. You don't need fancy equipment; often, you can work with what you have around the house. Remember the cool setup with the wooden pallet and colorful laundry baskets attached? That's a prime example of a 'bucket golf' style game you can easily replicate. You can use any spare buckets, old cardboard boxes, or even just hula hoops laid on the ground as targets. Assign different point values to each target to make it more competitive. We love using beanbags, soft balls, or even water balloons as projectiles for a refreshing twist! The beanbag toss game with five white plates marked with points is another super simple one – just grab some paper plates, write numbers on them, and spread them out. It’s amazing how much fun kids have aiming for those numbers! We've also made a giant outdoor tic-tac-toe game laid out on green grass, using white paper plates marked with "X" and "O" and ropes to form the game grid. And of course, a classic water balloon toss game board with targets marked with points is a staple for hot summer days, combining aiming skills with a splashy reward. These games keep them active, help develop coordination, and best of all, they're budget-friendly and super adaptable! And don't forget the popular TATTOO BOOTH! Setting up a little station with temporary tattoos is always a hit, letting them express their creativity without the mess of paint. For a classic, try a hopscotch game made from numbered concrete pavers (1 through 9) arranged on green grass. It’s a timeless game that gets them moving.
