Lets talk about: Rainbow Capitalism

Queer liberation is not rainbow capitalism.

I’m sorry, but haven’t you noticed that since people have been more open lately about their hate that stores are selling less pride stuff? It’s not a coincidence.

They're just profiting off of us. Most big companies dont give a shit about queer people. If they cared they wouldn't be supporting and giving money to anti-lgbta politicians. + if they REALLY gave a fuck, they'd be trying to help create resources for us or spreading awareness about resources that help us.

They use us for profit for a month then go onto the next big thing. They aren't allies, they just like the rainbow aesthetic.

Not pride month anymore, but never a wrong time to talk about these things :)

... Read moreI've seen so many rainbow flags and pride merch in stores, especially around June. At first, it felt great, like the world was finally recognizing us. But then, I started noticing a pattern, almost like a switch was flipped after Pride Month. That's when I really began to question what 'corporate pride' truly means and if it's more about profit than real progress. Rainbow capitalism, to me, is when companies use LGBTQ+ symbols and themes, like those rainbow items you see everywhere, to market products and increase profits, without genuinely supporting the community. It's not just about selling pride flags; it's about whether their actions match their words year-round. Do they donate to LGBTQ+ charities? Do they protect their queer employees? Do they lobby for our rights? Or do they, as I've sadly seen, quietly fund politicians who actively work against us? The images I saw earlier mentioning "corporate pride" and questioning if "companies selling pride items or using pride flags are true allies" really resonated with me. Genuine allyship, from my perspective, is so much more than a seasonal marketing campaign. It's about consistent action. It's about what happens behind the scenes, not just what's on display in store windows. A truly allied company wouldn't just sell rainbow t-shirts; they would ensure their workplace is inclusive, provide resources for their queer employees, and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, not just during Pride but all year long. They wouldn't be giving money to anti-LGBTQ+ politicians, as the article pointed out, nor would they just question individuals' sincerity outside Pride Month. They'd be committed long-term. So, how can we, as consumers, navigate this? It can be tricky, but here are a few things I try to do to spot it. First, I look beyond the rainbow. Does the company's website detail their long-term commitment to the LGBTQ+ community? Do they have transparent diversity and inclusion reports? Are they partnering with actual grassroots LGBTQ+ organizations, not just big, corporate-friendly ones? The OCR results mentioned that genuine allyship involves "creating resources," so I look for evidence of that. Second, I research their political donations. There are resources online that track corporate giving, and it’s often eye-opening to see who they truly support. Thirdly, I try to support small, queer-owned businesses or those known for authentic, consistent allyship. These are often the ones creating real resources and making a tangible difference within the community. It's about being discerning with our dollars. We have the power to show these corporations that our liberation isn't for sale, and that true support isn't just an aesthetic. Let's demand more than just 'corporate pride' from companies. Let's demand genuine, year-round commitment to equality and justice for all. Our community deserves more than just a marketing opportunity.

The book "Capital in the Twenty-First Century" is displayed with text highlighting its themes: wealth, power, control, inequality, and why the rich stay rich. It's described as dense but mind-blowing for understanding the widening gap between rich and poor.
The book "The Wealth of Nations" by Adam Smith is shown, described as the blueprint for understanding capitalism's origins and free markets. Text notes its historical relevance and how it shaped modern economic ideas.
