My parents believed strongly in the right to own guns "to maintain the power of the people in case we need to revolt," reflecting a fear of government overreach and a desire to protect freedom. From my perspective, these beliefs come from a deep mistrust of centralized authority but don’t fully address the systemic inequalities I see in today’s society. Sharing my views was often challenging because it felt like we were speaking different languages. However, this experience made me realize how important it is to engage with family members’ viewpoints openly rather than dismiss them outright. Humor and memes sometimes helped break the tension – for example, the idea that "corporations are evil" became a point of shared satire. It reminded me that while we might have ideological differences, there are overlapping worries about who controls power and information. Through these discussions, I learned the importance of clear communication and patience, especially within families with diverse political beliefs.
