Hardest part of 2024

My pregnancy with my baby boy was absolutely magical, until it wasn’t. I started having attacks of pain so bad all I could do was cry, and I couldn’t take anything for the pain because I was pregnant. After a particularly scary attack, I went into the ER with a suspected pulmonary embolism. After a lot of testing and hours in the ER, I was diagnosed with chronic cholelithiasis and had to have my gallbladder removed 1 month postpartum.

One such challenge is developing gallstones, a painful condition that affects a small percentage of pregnant women. It's crucial to understand the symptoms and advocate for yourself if you experience severe abdominal pain during pregnancy. Gallstones are hardened deposits that can form in the gallbladder, and while many women may develop them, only a minority require surgical intervention. Statistically, around 1 in 1,600 pregnant women will face gallstone complications during their pregnancy, making awareness essential. If you experience sharp pain on the right side of the abdomen, especially after eating fatty meals, it might be an indicator of gallbladder issues. Early diagnosis can help prevent further complications such as a blockage of bile ducts, which could lead to more severe health risks. Women can also benefit from dietary adjustments that help in managing gallstone symptoms. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in fiber and healthy fats can aid digestion and reduce the likelihood of further gallstone formation. Additionally, consulting with a healthcare professional can provide personalized advice tailored to individual health needs. In summary, staying informed about gallstone risks, recognizing the signs, and seeking timely medical advice can turn a potentially dangerous situation into a manageable one. The journey through pregnancy is often filled with surprises, making knowledge and self-advocacy key tools for expectant mothers.
