GRENINJA VGC REG F GUIDE

Greninja fills a unique niche in VGC as the only Pokémon with access to a priority multi-hit move, enabling specific team strategies. One of its strongest partners is Choice Scarf Annihilape, which benefits greatly from quickly building a powerful Rage Fist thanks to Greninja’s support.

Protean allows Greninja to drop its Dark typing and become a more favorable mono-Water type. Greninja remains a naturally fast Pokémon and provides valuable utility: Icy Wind offers speed control, while Haze cleanly answers the Dondozo / Tatsugiri combination. The final move slot is flexible depending on team needs, with Rain Dance and Taunt both being strong options.

Choice Scarf Annihilape also functions as an excellent utility attacker. Defiant punishes common Intimidate users such as Incineroar and Landorus-Therian, making it difficult for opponents to safely pivot. Final Gambit with a Choice Scarf can remove key opposing Pokémon and disrupt an opponent’s core strategy, while U-turn allows Annihilape to pivot out while maintaining offensive pressure.

A Grass Tera Type on Annihilape is preferred in this duo. Without it, Greninja’s Water Shuriken can deal over a quarter of Annihilape’s HP, making Grass Tera an important consideration for team synergy.

Because of its ability Protean, Greninja can adapt its typing to suit the battle context, often switching from Dark to pure Water type, which greatly improves its matchup versatility. I’ve found that including Icy Wind is crucial—it slows down opposing fast Pokémon, giving your team a speed advantage crucial in double battles. Using Greninja alongside Choice Scarf Annihilape creates a formidable duo. Annihilape’s Defiant ability effectively counters common Intimidate users, which are otherwise a huge threat to offensive teams. It’s worth emphasizing the synergy of Annihilape’s Grass Tera Type; this not only reduces Greninja’s Water Shuriken damage against it but also expands Annihilape’s offensive coverage. Personally, I often select Final Gambit on Annihilape as a surprise knockout tool, which can break pivotal opponent setups. Tailoring the fourth move slot on Greninja to your team’s needs is another important aspect. Whether you choose Rain Dance to boost Water moves or Taunt to prevent setup strategies on the opponent’s side, this flexibility lets you tweak Greninja’s role to fit your play style. During several tournaments, adjusting that last move according to the meta helped me maintain an edge. Overall, building a team around Greninja which balances offense, utility, and speed control provides a unique experience in VGC. I recommend practicing the timing of Icy Wind and managing Annihilape’s Rage Fist build-up to maximize your chances of victory. This duo demands precise play but offers rewarding tactical depth for competitive players.
