Ajaw Prop from Genshin

Hey everyone! 👋 As you saw, I just wrapped up my Ajaw prop for my Kinich cosplay, and it's been such a fun journey! Making props can seem daunting, especially for iconic Genshin Impact items, but I want to share some thoughts and tips from my experience, especially since I know many of you are looking into Ajaw cosplay. First off, why Ajaw? This little pixelated gadget is instantly recognizable to anyone familiar with the Golden Slumber questline and, of course, the vibrant Kinich. It adds so much character and authenticity to a Kinich cosplay, bringing that extra layer of detail that really makes the outfit pop. For me, nailing this prop was crucial for truly embodying Kinich. My Prop-Making Journey: From Idea to Reality When I started, I knew I wanted a sturdy yet visually accurate pixel art prop. Here’s a bit about my process and some general tips if you're thinking of making your own: Reference, Reference, Reference! Before cutting anything, I scoured in-game screenshots and official art. Getting the precise pixel count and color palette for the Ajaw was key. For a prop like this, where every pixel counts, having clear images is your best friend. Material Choices for Pixel Art Props: I personally chose a combination of EVA foam and some lightweight wood for the core structure, especially for the supporting wooden stick. EVA foam is fantastic for its versatility – it's easy to cut, shape, and sand. For the pixelated effect, I layered smaller foam pieces or used a grid method on a single piece before painting. You could also consider thick cardstock, or for a more advanced approach, 3D printing, but I love the hands-on feel of traditional crafting. Achieving the Pixelated Look: The distinctive yellow base with green and white accents is what makes Ajaw stand out. I meticulously planned out my 'pixels' on a grid. For the main body, I used a bright yellow, then carefully added the green and white details. The black sunglasses and the spiky green top were separate pieces I crafted and attached to give them a slightly raised, dimensional look, enhancing that pixel-art feel. Precision is Key! A good, sharp blade and a reliable cutting mat are non-negotiable. Especially when you're dealing with small, intricate shapes for pixel art, precision tools make all the difference. Take your time with every cut and paint stroke. Those blue paint splatters you might see on my cutting mat? Proof of the crafting in action! 😉 Assembly and Durability: Once all the pieces were cut and painted, it was assembly time. I used strong adhesive to attach the pixel layers and ensure the spiky green top and black sunglasses were secure. For a prop that might be carried around at conventions, making sure it’s durable is super important. The wooden stick I used provides a solid handle and prevents bending or breaking. Beyond the Prop: Completing Your Kinich Cosplay While the Ajaw prop is a standout, don't forget the other elements of Kinich's design! Think about the fabric choices for the outfit, styling the wig, and subtle makeup to complete the look. Each piece contributes to bringing the character to life. My Top Tip for Fellow Cosplayers: Don't be afraid to try new techniques or materials! This was my first time really diving into a pixel art prop, and while there were challenges, the sense of accomplishment is amazing. Start with what you have, learn as you go, and most importantly, have fun with the process!
