Terrestrials Review!
I read Terrestrials, the complete duology, by Gretchen Powell Fox. I gave it a 4/5, I felt like some parts lulled a bit but it is a very compelling story overall and I love the fiery MFCs like Terra! Terrestrials is a dystopian future with a huge divide- literally and figuratively- between the have’s and the have nots.
I recently dove headfirst into Gretchen Powell Fox's 'Terrestrials: The Complete Duology,' and I'm still thinking about that world! As someone who loves a good dystopian read, this one really scratched an itch. The author masterfully crafts a future society where the 'haves' and 'have-nots' aren't just socially divided, but literally separated by layers of earth. On the surface, you have the 'Terrestrials' – the ground people who are super privileged, living in their advanced societies, blissfully unaware (or perhaps willfully ignorant) of the struggles below. Then there are those living 'Underground,' grappling with challenging conditions and a stark reality. This 'huge divide' isn't just a backdrop; it's a living, breathing character in itself, fueling the tension and making every revelation feel incredibly impactful. What truly drew me in was the journey of Terra, our main character. She embodies that 'fiery personality' I always look for in a protagonist. She's not just a bystander; she's a force of nature, constantly questioning the status quo and pushing against the hidden truths. Throughout the duology, she's finding out things about secrets that the government had been keeping – and trust me, those revelations are explosive. It's not just about a personal quest; it's about uncovering a massive conspiracy that affects everyone, both above and below. I found myself rooting for her every step of the way, admiring her resilience and determination even when faced with overwhelming odds. The sheer scale of the societal injustice is palpable. You feel the tension and the inequality on every page, making you question what truly defines progress and privilege. It made me think a lot about our own societal structures and what happens when power becomes too concentrated, or when vital information is withheld from the populace. Fox doesn't shy away from showing the harsh realities, but she also weaves in elements of hope, loyalty, and the relentless human spirit. While the first book, 'Terrestrial,' masterfully set up this intricate world, the second one, 'Underground,' really brought everything to a head, tying all those threads together in a satisfying way. The way the two books ('Terrestrial' and 'Underground') are now put together in 'The Complete Duology' makes it such a seamless reading experience. For anyone who enjoys a story with strong female leads, intricate world-building, and a plot that keeps you guessing about government secrets and societal upheavals, I highly recommend picking up 'The Complete Duology.' It’s such a convenient way to immerse yourself in both parts of the story without any breaks. Even with a few moments where the pacing lulled a bit for me – which often happens in expansive dystopian narratives – the overall narrative was incredibly compelling and the payoff was worth it. I walked away feeling like I'd experienced a truly immersive and thought-provoking adventure that will stay with me for a long time. It's definitely one for your dystopian bookshelf!
