Venturing in China as a Singaporean Entrepreneur

Thank you @vulcanpost for the interview on my ventures in China! It’s been an absolutely fulfilling learning journey for me and my partners! @bewildgx @luokegx

Super shoutout to Dawn (SGBudgetBabe) for connecting me with your network in China as well as Sam Sng for your guidance and help in incorporating our companies!

If you are also looking to explore the elusive China market and have no idea where to begin, I was the same too! I guess it’s really about being open minded and humble enough to explore and learn from others! Also to understand that what we read online might not always be accurate. Only when we are willing to take the step to explore, are we able to get first hand information based on our own experience instead of relying solely on online research, which has proven to be extremely unreliable with tons of misinformation.

Thankful to my friends and partners for being on this journey with me!

... Read moreEmbarking on business ventures in China taught me the importance of understanding the local Chinese business mindset deeply, beyond what online research can offer. One key realization was that each region has its own unique consumer behaviors and regulations, especially in Special Economic Zones like Guangxi, which serve as vital economic hubs connecting China with ASEAN countries. I found that many foreign entrepreneurs initially underestimate the complexity of local partnerships and market nuances. For example, in China, relationships and trust often play a pivotal role in business dealings, which requires time and genuine engagement to build. Adapting to China’s fast-changing regulatory environment is crucial. While some cities pose stricter controls on foreign enterprises, designated Free Trade Zones provide more favorable conditions and support. Leveraging these zones can help mitigate challenges when establishing wholly foreign-owned companies. In my experience, maintaining humility and openness to learn directly from local partners proved invaluable. Recognizing that some widely shared online information may be outdated or inaccurate encouraged me to seek firsthand insights through networking and collaboration. For Singaporean entrepreneurs aiming to enter the Chinese market, I recommend starting with thorough groundwork in understanding cultural and business expectations, then progressively building a presence through local alliances. Patience and resilience are essential, as achieving traction is more of a marathon than a sprint. Lastly, tapping into communities and mentorship networks significantly eased my journey, helping navigate administrative processes like company incorporation and market entry strategies. Sharing experiences within these circles also provides practical knowledge on overcoming common pain points encountered by overseas entrepreneurs.

From Art Director to UI/UX: My Key Shift
🖤 Being an Art Director for 4 years taught me how to see problems. Venturing into UI/UX taught me how to solve them. That’s where I kept hearing about Double Diamond Thinking — a framework everyone mentions, but I didn’t really “get it” until I applied it myself. Here’s what it’s really abou
