POV: I Diy'd a mini renovation
During "the vid" my little family and I moved into my Grandparent's home while we shopped for our first house. While there, we took on several DIY projects starting with this living room.
📌 pulled up the carpet
📌 painted all walls and doors
📌 installed vinyl plank flooring
📌 replaced the blinds
how'd we do?
Embarking on a DIY home renovation can feel incredibly rewarding, especially when you see the dramatic transformation of a space. My own experience with a mini living room makeover was no exception, and I'm excited to share some practical tips and insights I gained along the way, hoping it serves as a helpful home improvement tutorial for your next project! Tackling the Old Carpet & Prepping the Concrete Floor: My renovation journey began with pulling up the old, worn-out carpet. This step, while physically demanding, is crucial. I learned quickly that having the right tools makes all the difference. A sturdy utility knife for cutting the carpet into manageable strips, a good pair of pliers for pulling up tack strips, and a pry bar for removing old staples were my best friends. Once the carpet was gone, we were left with a bare concrete floor. It's important to thoroughly clean and inspect the concrete for any cracks or uneven spots. I spent time sweeping, vacuuming, and scraping away any remaining adhesive or debris. This clean slate was essential before moving on to the next stages. Painting Walls & Doors for a Fresh Look: Next up was painting, which instantly brightened the space. We decided on a refreshing white for the walls, which made the room feel much larger and more modern. If your space has a light blue door, as ours did, painting it a crisp white can create a seamless, contemporary feel with your new white walls. Don't underestimate the power of proper preparation here! Cleaning the walls, patching any holes, and carefully taping off trim and ceilings will save you headaches later. Using a good quality primer, especially over darker colors or stains, ensures an even finish. For doors, I found that removing them from their hinges and painting them flat on sawhorses gave a much smoother, drip-free result. Installing Vinyl Plank Flooring: A Game Changer: Installing vinyl plank flooring was by far the most impactful part of this mini renovation. Seeing those boxes of new flooring transform the room was incredibly satisfying. For anyone tackling this DIY, I highly recommend watching a few tutorial videos beforehand. Key tools I used included a tape measure, a utility knife with plenty of fresh blades for clean cuts, a tapping block, a rubber mallet, and spacers to maintain an expansion gap around the perimeter. Starting in a corner and ensuring your first row is perfectly straight is critical. Remember to stagger your seams to create a natural, professional look and avoid a repeating pattern. The light-colored vinyl plank flooring we chose made an enormous difference, replacing the old carpet with a durable and beautiful surface that was surprisingly easy to install. Updating Window Blinds for Instant Impact: Finally, we replaced the old black blinds. This might seem like a small detail, but swapping them out for new white blinds made an immediate and noticeable difference. It instantly lifted the room's aesthetic and allowed more natural light to filter in, complementing the new white walls beautifully. This is a quick and relatively inexpensive upgrade that can dramatically improve the look and feel of your windows, tying the whole room together. Looking back, every step of this DIY home improvement project, from the initial demolition to the final touches, taught me so much. It proved that with a bit of research, patience, and effort, a significant transformation is totally achievable!

that looks awesome! love the flooring! 🥰
