Know Your HISTORY‼️

Take a few minutes to listen if you can. We have got to do better as parents and talk to our children about the importance of our history. Times have changed but thankfully we still have access to resources that gives us more insight.

“A people without the knowledge of our past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots.”

- Marcus Garvey

Growing up, my parents made it a point to share stories and lessons from our past, which deeply influenced my sense of identity and pride. In today’s world, even though times have changed, having access to a wide range of historical resources online allows us to connect more meaningfully with our origins. As parents or guardians, one effective strategy is to create engaging, age-appropriate discussions about historical events and figures. Using books, documentaries, and community events can make history relatable and alive for children. For example, introducing them to the resilience and contributions of Black leaders and communities helps build a sense of belonging and understanding. I personally find inspiration in Marcus Garvey’s words — "A people without the knowledge of our past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots." This reminds me that historical awareness is foundational not only for individual identity but also for collective empowerment. Encouraging children to ask questions and explore history from different perspectives empowers them to appreciate diversity and complexity within our heritage. It also reinforces critical thinking, which is essential for navigating the modern world. Integrating history into everyday life discussions, celebrating cultural milestones, and highlighting the relevance of past struggles and achievements can foster respect and motivation. Ultimately, making history accessible and meaningful to children helps nurture confident and informed individuals who understand where they come from and why their heritage matters. This ongoing learning journey is a valuable gift we can give to future generations.
